They are to baseball what The Harlem Globetrotters were to basketball.
Were? The Globetrotters are still around and touring.

Unless you’re comparing their levels of public awareness and cultural relevance, beyond just the niche filled within the sport.

Yeah they are still around. But they don't play in large venues or on national TV anymore. They are not as well known to the masses as they once were.

Went with the grandkids (6 and 9) last year in Philly.

it was fun, they liked it a lot. Once was enough for me.

I’ve seen the Globetrotters three times and Meadowlark’s All-Stars once and they were all the same show. I’ve seen the Bananas once on TV and got the same feeling. Fun, but not worth seeing more than once. More power to them for making bank while people are willing to pay.

Yep gotcha. From that sense, “were” definitely applies here since the Bananas are right now enjoying a level of prominence the Globetrotters once had.

Agreed, it’s a “show” after all and there are only so many nuances that can be added over time.

That said, the Globetrotters come to Hershey every year and I usually have the opportunity to get free tickets (and food) in my employer’s suite in the arena. So my son and I have gone a few times in recent years and we’ve had fun.

I remember coaching the little kiddos the level below little league and tee ball. The parents complained a little bit, but every player played a different position each inning. We had a practice where the kids just moved around so we could see where they preformed best.
There was a lad named Doug, he could smack the ball when he focused. So when I was pitching to him for batting practice, you could see his mind wonder. Hey Doug, which teacher made you mad today. Holds baseball up. Pretend their face is on this baseball and smack it. He'd get a big smile on his face, and as the ball got close to him, his eyes would get big, matching the smile on his face. And the ball was going over the center field fence. I loved watching that.
