you might not believe this, but kids have not been born on a level playing field since the beginning of time...it's what the individual does to get to a level playing field in life. IMO, our government should be creating the environment for people to succeed, not to take from one which has succeeded to give to the others.

A lot of the folks in the 10% (don't know why you picked that number, top 10% is only about $150k/year) .I'd bet a lot of posters on here fall into that category) didn't start that way. I know I'm in that category and I started as a Private E-1 in the Army.

If you're in the field of education I bet you've seen the difference not in intelligence of your students but their interest or effort. You can probably identify, with at least a 50-50 probability those who will be in the top 10% during their careers and those who will not.

I don't think I'm qualified to state definitively, but from what I've read and experienced, I can at least state that education in this country has not gotten better during your 28 years....I know, a general statement. But at least in some locations a significant percentage can't read or do math at grade level. It's not that the teachers are bad, or we're not putting enough money into education, a lot of these kids don't have parental support, don't care, or have some other reason fort the lack of success. Some schools just pass the kids from grade to grade, even though they haven't completed the required work, or can't pass the tests. These will be part of the 90% that we're proposing to subsidize from the 10% that did the work, passed the tests and qualified for higher paying jobs. I'm not sure that's the role of government. I'm not suggesting that everyone in the bottom 90% falls into this category, but I'd be surprised if you would'd agree there are many.

I didn't even bring up the work ethic of the 10% vs 90%....some salesman who works 60 hours a week, travels away from his family day or weeks at a time, vs the worker who doesn't want to put in time beyond 40 hours, won't take overtime, doesn't want to travel. I'm not casting aspersions, everyone has their own life's goals, but is it fair to take from one to support the other?

Tom, I don't think most think others don't try hard enough - although that's true of some, but definitely not others.

But here's the thing, even if you're one of those who goes to work every day, saves money, does all the right things, it doesn't mean that everything will be equal. Just a personal example: I started my college career in the college of education, I wanted to be a teacher....somewhere along the line, I discovered the economics of work. That is, I found out that teachers work hard, and really don't make as much money as someone who works just as hard, but is an accountant, a salesman, an engineer or many other professions. So I transferred to a major in business.

It has always seem incongruous to me that someone who understands the economics of work, knows that for the same amount of work, he or she could earn significantly more money, decides to stay in the field, and complains that they don't make enough money. All of us have choice..you make yours, you live with the consequences or you make a new one.

Now, before you think I'm unfeeling, uncaring or part of the "rest of us aren't trying hard enough". I'm not. I found myself in exactly the same place. I started as a Private E-1, as I've posted before. Got an MBA through the Army program, had offers to leave for corporate positions that paid twice what I was making in the service, but I decided that serving the country was more worthwhile that becoming a product manager for a cereal or yogurt or such.

The difference between the two of us, it might appear, I never complained about what money someone who took the corporate offers made financially. I had that choice, and made my own decision.

Through youth sports, I got to know a couple, both of whom were local teachers ... one a high school teacher in a neighboring school district, the other an elementary school teacher in our school district. They were able to afford a near 3,000 SF home, and raise 4 kids without any financial struggle. From what I can gather (and correct me if I'm wrong, as I don't pay much attention to your contributions, as you seem unintelligent, whiny and not very interesting), your whole schtick is that you're poor, and it's everyone else's fault (especially those mean billionaires and those who support them), so the whole system has to change in order to make you less poor. But maybe it's your fault?

Hell, I am the teacher who has said multiple times that I get paid fine. None of this is about my pay. It’s not about not working hard. It’s about a rigged system where there’s the wealthy club, and 90% of Americans getting bent over, whether you think we are or not. Rising costs of basically everything affects the vast majority of us. I ***** about healthcare costs. Well, I had to pay $350 up front the other day for a procedure I need every 3 years. “New policy as of July 15.” First time ever. 3 years ago was the first time insurance didn’t cover it. I’m sick of it because I’m playing “The American Dream” game and Republican policies in my state have taken money out of my pocket and given it to insurance companies.

That’s where I’m coming from.

No one said you (or any teacher) is stupid. I said thank you for your service, as you sacrifice other opportunities to help youth.

What I am saying, is you’ve never put it on the line on a sink or swim scenario, and therefore have no comprehension of what it feels like to take the risk. That’s why you don’t understand the desire entrepreneurs have to keep as much of their hard earned success as they can. I like to decide myself, who I tithe towards, or am a help to. I don’t need the government to make all those decisions for me.

I don't really understand the "we'd accomplish nothing" part. Did you actually read my column? 😂 I'm not proposing the status quo. I'm proposing better police training and accountability, stronger antitrust laws, closing tax loopholes, limiting executive power, housing/zoning reform, changing the federal incentives that have helped drive college costs through the dadgum roof, and putting a heckuva of a lot more emphasis on skilled trades (yes, I'm a Mike Rowe guy).

Now, if your point is that I'd have a hard time getting some of that through Congress...I'd agree and say that's fair. But that's more of an issue with our current system not proof that moderate policies accomplish nothing. And the billionaire campaign-funding thing? Unless you're psychic, I'm not sure how you got that from my policy positions. Care to elaborate?

I am admittedly very skeptical of Mike Rowe's motives and therefor am a bit ignorant to the details of his mission, but one thing that I consistently fail to grasp is what is the barrier for the unfilled trade jobs being filled besides an unqualifable lack of desire from the labor force? When I've listened to him speak on this his criticism seems to be mostly a nebulous society is weak and lazy trope that seems unactionable in reality.

I'm reminded of when Obama was President and approved a system to incentivize retraining and education for coal workers that was met with disdain from the very people Rowe seems to want to get into unfilled positions. Is it as simple as tradesmen won't accept help from a Democrat or is there something more complex at play here?
