An avalanche has swept the upper side of Broad Peak just as a big group was going to the summit. Among the missing is famed Nepalese climber Nims Purja.

Older news, but an historic tragedy in an endeavour that got me a helicopter rescue in 1988, December 23rd. I had a fall and suffered a bad tib/fib fx. I crawled, slid, grovelled a mile from my accident to my subsequent rescue.

I quit serious climbing that day.

edit: my accident was in Kodiak not Pakistan, full ice/ snow conditions and steep terrain regardless.

I’ve been on some mountain tops when storms have hit that made me reconsider my choices. Never did any technical climbing. Nothing like watching lightening shooting down crevasses below your position.

On July 4th, 1977, I took a high school friend up Long's Peak. She was at Rocky Ridge Music camp. We had pre-arranged this with parental permission.

We were both 17. We left the trailhead at 4am, summited at 10:30, and got caught in the worst storm I ever experienced in the mountains. We were on our way down and got caught in the trough. It was still before noon. I found us an open flake to take shelter under, but only she fit completely. We were up out of the trough by maybe 25 feet. We did see lightning strike the West Face above us and both were intantly zapped, my legs stiffened straight out. We got shocked twice more, but did not see the strikes. We were both 17 and quite frankly terrified.

July 4, 1977.

She was way cute too 😉

Why are you here?

You blame your obsession on us posting threads about Iowa, but I never even mentioned Iowa. I honestly never thought about Iowa as I wrote any post in this thread before now.

In fact as I followed this tragedy in Pakistan, I never on e thought about Iowa, but yet here you are in a thread about Pakistan!!!!!

You were both 17 a chosen at that age means nothing especially in a mountain top in a storm that you didn’t know how would end . Don’t give the Iowa guy **** for jumping to the conclusion that you were thinking about.

Well, we may have cuddled and kissed later waiting out another bad storm, but I do not kiss and tell, just imply.

I was mainly offended a piss bird commented, like he ever experienced anything like that.

She was a hottie that played the cello. She played professionally, and was a high maintenance woman. Cute as a button at 17 though, lol

After I retire.... going to spend 1-2mos in the fall there each season as long as my health holds out. Can't wait. In town... Moab ain't what it used to be, by a mile (massivley ugly due to the transition from mom and pop stores to corporate concrete and steel and overly developed everything compared to 30yrs ago..) but the playground is bigger and better and better mapped. So many world class choices on Americas greatest playground. Gawd my mouth is watering just thinking about it.

I’m heading back in October for a couple of weeks. Any suggestions- been to arches, goblin and Bryce . This time Moab and monument valley and Zion

Do you mountain bike? They just opened up a ton of trails to ebikes if thats yer thing. Lots of e rentals in town.

I've yet to kayak the Colorado, October should maybe give ya a decent temp to do a shorter trip? World class rock wall canyons.

Go on the guided huge Truck tours? They do a great on right thru Slickrock thats a must. Bring a glass of vino, strap in the back.. and drive up 45 degree angle rock. Or, rent a smaller one and drive yourself.

Got caught in a hail/sleet storm at the top of Pike's Peak. It was not a fun drive back down. 5-10 mph until we reached the brake check point. That's enough adventure for me.

Lots of outdoors guys on here. We're heading down to Gila Natl Forest, NM around Mimbres. Anyone been in that area? Hiking up to Gila Cliff Dwellings and down to the Hatch Chili Fest.
