Is 6 wins enough?

I don't like paying unproven head coaches what we're paying them, but I understand why it happens.

I'm not the biggest Lebby fan. My biggest concern is that I don't think he's strong enough on the mental side of the game.

That said, before we fire him, we need to ask ourselves a few honest questions: How serious are we about NIL? Can we realistically compete in this environment? And what are our expectations?

If you fire Lebby and replace him with someone making even more money, but only improve by a game or two, is it really worth it? I don't want to throw good money after a bad investment.

Or we hire someone of similar caliber, keep NIL at the same level, and end up right back where we started? At some point, we have to decide whether the problem is the coach, the resources, or simply the reality of competing in today's college football landscape.
The problem is the cloud hanging out there that there will be a split of college sports at some point. You have to invest and hope we are on the right side of the split. Because if we aren't - all that $$$ we have rolling in b/c of the SEC will vanish. And my interest will drop.

What would a bland 6-6 do for recruiting? Currently State is 17th out of 16 SEC teams in recruiting. Would 6 wins with a possibility of losing a bowl game to go under .500 again. I just don’t think that is a good enough reason to keep him.

on the other hand, winning 6 and possibly 7 with a bowl win, might mean it is better to keep him knowing you are going to have to spend $10 mil or more for a P4 sitting coach and probably $7-8 mil for a sitting G6 coach. State CANNOT go the coordinator or Assistant Coach route again.

the bug a boo in all this keeping him at 6 wins: 2027 schedule!

what happens if South Carolina, Missouri and Vandy get replaced with Georgia, Florida, and A&M, and State keeps Texas, Oklahoma, Alabama, Auburn, LSU, and Ole Miss? So we keep a guy who probably goes 6-7 and has to face that schedule in year 4, likely regressing and setting State another year behind on the road to recovery.
FYI - 9 game, 4 year rotation has been set: https://www.secsports.com/champions...ll-opponents-reveal#sec-team-schedule--missst

Bama, Vandy, OM are permanents - H,H,A, this year, A,A,H in '27
'27 flips to Ark, UF, A&M at home, and UGA, UK, UTn on the road.

Why did Auburn want Cohen? What did they see that we couldn’t see?

Why did Florida want Loafers?

Athletics Directors are supposed to be top notch Managers . They hire guys and sometimes gals that get paid way more than they do. It is definitely a fundraising job. But the Institution has to have benefactors who are extremely wealthy and love to give back. State is never going to be successful depending on rank and file fans, friends and alumni who earn under $100k per year in today’s economy. The $100 per month donors are always needed but they aren’t going to keep the Boat afloat!

The Duffs are MSU grads but they aren’t loyal to the Athletics department. They are giving to multiple charities and they give some to all 3 universities.

The family of 4 has been priced out of attending games. That hurts more than people realize because what happens to those kids who grow up not loving to attend games at State? Some of them may grow up to be multi- millionaires and never give a dime of support.

when I was young all of my family were Ole Miss fans. Never attended college. Never set foot on campus. To them, State was like Southern Miss. Just another school in the State that didn’t play football.

I wanted to go to State so I did. I loved it. I still love it. But spent my life in retail and wholesale sales. That ain’t buying football player money.
Duffs are not State grads and their dad went to OM.

Yeah. I misread an article. I see one went to Utah valley and one went to USM.

so even worse, we have zero billionaire supporters! Oh well. I guess State will just have to depend on the hundredaires to support athletics.

6 would mean, most likely, one B1G win, and 2 SEC wins, along with 3 cupcakes. Given our schedule, 6 would be a pretty good season, given what we've had under Lebby. 5 might be enough, if the one SEC win was OM since about half the fanbase considers that game to trump just about anything else.
We only play 3 non conference games so 6 wins would mean 3 SEC wins

Exactly, and within the SEC we miss both KY and Ark which are the other 2 teams projected to be in the bottom 3 of the SEC along with us. I mean we only have 2 SEC wins over the past 3 seasons and both have been against Ark. So not getting to play them this season is a bummer. I mean folks have to get out of the old mindset because demanding 7-5 this year is much different than it has been in the past.

And the last win against Arkansas was because they committed 200 yards in penalties. I don't doubt we're better this year than last year but every single SEC team on our schedule has us penciled in as a win and I can't blame them.

Depends on which six . If one of the wins is OM and Kamario commits to coming back he's in .

I think he should have been fired last year after being blown out and not even looking competitive the last four games of the season. The blowouts to playoff bound Georgia and Mississippi were understandable, but not Misery and certainly not Wake Forest.

With that being said, I think 6-6 is good enough for him to keep his job.

Yes, 6 wins is enough to keep lenny poo. He’s toast with 5 wins or less.

So @Bulldawg77 - is it someone other than Selmon drawing this line in the sand on the win total?
Your a lister it’s being reported or should I say mentioned by steve on Bo bounds shows in the spring. He’s mentioned it a couple of times . It’s been mentioned by other sources and pod cast And it’s pretty common knowledge that 7 is the magic number. But like I stated I could see it get complicated if one of those 6 is egg

I believe 6 regular season wins would be bare minimum with keeping his job, but he'd really need to win the bowl game (in that scenario) to convince me.

Anything less than 6 and I'm afraid we'd have to part ways.

Despite the shape of our program when he arrived, you cannot take 4 years to produce a winning record in today's environment.

I saw it on the pay board for this site and it was on a podcast weeks ago. I have no idea what Elitedawgs says nor do I care.
My comment was more mocking the entire thread about the ultimatum and giving credit to ED for starting that rumor when I've heard it several places. Not a dig on you.

1 win will probably be enough for an extension and raise. It’s a true buddy system and MSU absolutely LOVES nepotism. It’s a wonderful culture and recipe for true success.
