In 2026, the current pension benefits (at age 62) are as follows:
43 days of MLB service time = $7,250 pear
1 year of MLB service = $29,000 per year
5 years of MLB service = $145,000 per year
10 years of MLB service = $290,000 per year
Plus with 4 years of service you get free medical & health benefits for life.

Does your parenthetical clause mean that former MLB players don’t receive retirement benefits until age 62?

Does this apply to just regular MLB employees as well or is it just for players? If this doesn't apply to regular MLB employees, what kind of retirement/pension would they get?

I'm sure just the players. I bet regular employees probably get decent retirement plan but nothing like this.

I used to go to church with Seth Smith and I remember someone telling me he ended up something like a single digit number of games away from that 10-year mark

If Coach hadn’t cut me because he was jealous of my talent, we would’ve won state, and I’d be well on my way to that 10-year MLB pension. What could’ve been.

Serious question - should MLB even offer a pension these days?

Maybe for long-time guys that kill their bodies and are backup catchers but most starters should have generational money and guys that get a cup of coffee seems odd to be able to cash in even a small amount for life. So maybe their should be a career earnings level with this.

I bet MLB employees get zero pention like 90% of non-unionized corporate America

For a 10 year veteran of the MLB that retirement check probably goes into his wife's cookie jar for the grandkids birthday parties.
