I talked to Cael (about something totally unrelated...actually as much specific to his other job as a cookie salesman as a wrestling coach) right after Christian got done with that interview. My first words were "At the risk of using your words from about a decade ago, I have a plan!"

Why is the head official not the one looking at the replays, especially in the semi-finals/finals.
They assign 3 to do reviews and another officials rotates in. It was 2-1 to overturn the call. The 3 review officials assigned for NCAAs were Hnath, Fitzgerald and Kessel

So this call demonstrates that there is slightly less than an 83% chance that the officials trusted with the reviews at NCAAs do not know what constitutes a takedown?

The fact that it was objectively a TD and 2 officials subjectively decided to overturn it is more than a little disconcerting.
The part of that entire sequence that is the most troubling to me is the fact that when the three was awarded and wrestling was stopped PJ lost the opportunity to finish even more demonstratively. The only way that should have been overturned is if the call was definitively incorrect, which obviously it wasn't.

Thanks. My opinion is that to overturn a call on the mat, it must be unanimous. Deference should be given to the referee making the call live. If the reviewers can't all agree, then that means the call on the mat was difficult enough that the referee's call shouldn't be overturned.

There should not be a review of a sequence that is stopped and the match ended. Either let it play out to a natural stopping point or it is over without a review. Just like a pinfall, which can't be reviewed.
What bothers me about it is that the vote was actually 2-2 - If you consider the mat official. By saying it was 2-1 they are saying they ignore the opinion of the person closest to the action.
This is the Super Bowl or World Cup approach. But there is a key difference. Football and soccer have unlimited budgets for technology. There were 92 cameras at the Super Bowl, 32 with high frame rates. Soccer has chips embedded in the ball so they know precisely where the ball is at all times.
By trying to be the NFL on a budget they do the sport a disservice. In this case they changed the match deciding call on a tie vote.

I'm more than sure Penn State fatigue was a major factor. Just my 2 cents.
I hope the officials coached and discussed that in that type of situation, the referee should be patient and let the sequence play out before blowing his whistle and awarding the takedown. That is what bothers me the most. They overturn the takedown, and they have to start over, while PJ had a cradle locked up when the whistle was blown.
You can't be waiting to call it once it's a takedown you call it. In that situation once the hip hits it's a takedown. The review refs blew it . It's not the ref on the mats fault he got it right.
Listen, I don't want to get into an argument, but, what can't he be waiting to call it in that situation? Knowing the way replay works, I think you should be taught to be patient in that situation. Now, if it's a clear double leg takedown with zero question, you blow the whistle. This situation was obviously close enough that too officials chose to overturn it. I maintain that I would like to see the mat ref show patience in that situation. I'm not blaming him, I just believe it is something that can be used as a situation to learn from.
There is a corollary in soccer. Assistant ref's used to call offside immediately if they thought it was the case. But once soccer added video reviews they were trained to hold the flag until the sequence of play was done (a goal was scored or posession changed). This way they could disallow the goals that were truly offside upon review, but let the goals stand when the assistant ref was in error. It can be hard to train a ref to let the whole sequence play out when they previously have been trained to call things quickly, but it can be done.
That said the ref now has to decide when to call something quickly and when to wait while withstanding the crowd and coaches going crazy in their ear. Human nature is to respond quickly to that kind of pressure.
