Members of the 1986 World Series champion Mets celebrate the 40th anniversary of team's last title​


NEW YORK (AP) — Members of the 1986 World Series champion New York Mets celebrated the 40th anniversary of the franchise’s last title on Saturday.

That Mets team won 108 regular-season games and beat the Boston Red Sox in a seven-game Fall Classic.

Members of that squad marveled at the miraculous turn of events against Boston on the way to the championship and lamented the plight of the current team, which has the second-worst record in the National League at 47-64 heading into Saturday's game against Miami.

I wonder how many of those guys will be around in 2036 when they celebrate the 50th anniversary of their last title.

In 1985, the Mets lost the NL East to the eventual World Champion Cardinals by three games. Early in the ‘86 season, the Mets swept a four-game series with the Cardinals in St. Louis. I knew then that the ‘86 Mets team was special.

Yeah, I caught every Met game that was televised on WOR 9 in 1969. And the Knicks, wow, a very fine and likable team the year they won their first championship.

The early- to mid-eighties were a lot of fun for me: PSU, Georgetown, Redskins. Bliss.
