Who beat him in carver?
That loss to Delgado stung, but led to one of my favorite Carver memories.

I was a student at the time and I always sat in the floor seats right off the side of the mat on the visitor's side. It was always fun there as we would talk smack to the opposing wrestlers as they were warming up (nothing really too serious or mean spirited or anything, everything was all in good fun)

Anyway, Delgado beat McD in overtime, and Jim Heffernan was running around like a maniac screaming "We broke him! We broke him!"

The very next match, Ramos beat BJ Futrell by major decision. This was an upset at the time as Futrell was higher ranked and had never lost to Ramos. After the match, the kid next to me started screaming back at Heffernan "That's how you break someone!"

So Heffernan comes over to us and gets right in our faces, puts his finger in our faces while he yells at us about needing to be respectful (or something like that, I really couldn't hear him). The entire time, Mark Perry (who was an assistant at Illinois at the time) is in the background staring at us with this incredulous "what the f***" look on his face as he can't believe what Heffernan is doing. He yells at us for a minute or two before he realizes he should turn around and get back to coaching his team, and Perry comes over and grabs him while just giving us a huge smirk

Anyway, all the years and meets we sat in those seats and talked smack to the opposing team, that's the only time someone on the team actually responded back to any of us. It was a bizarre but hilarious thing that happened

If I recall correctly, Mac was 22-8 his redshirt year. Wrestled at 133 and had recurring battles against Nate Moore and Montell Marion, who also were taking red-shirt years and also wrestling at 133. Eight losses as a red-shirt rosh, and then a total of just four losses the next three years. They might not have developed every wrestler to have come into the room, but give TnT credit for developing Mac. Same with Marion.
