wouldn't it be funny if Univ of Iowa decided to sponsor ISU athletics...specifying a miniature tiger hawk for the logo?

We could have the UI Health Care/Hospital sponsor the team. It would work nicely with the wave, fit well on the uniforms, and you could argue Iowa isn’t selling its soul for some extra cash (although they would be giving the AD money).
The downside is that the AD probably can’t claim self sufficiency anymore if another arm of the university is sending them money, which is something I think is important to both them and the university based on past comments. Iowa would also get criticized for spending hospital money there instead of medical research.

If John Deere is the highest bidder and willing to pay $15M a year, but the logo has to be that Kelly green tractor, you turning it down?

It's true, Iowans use their machinery. Dad always insisted on having a Deere mower. Their HQ is just across the river in Moline. But Illinois does have an ag school, which might complicate things.
Perhaps JD could change their colors to gold with black supporting colors. That would work nicely for everybody.
