9 and it’s not even close. You have the best hiking (Sierra Nevadas, Grand Canyon, many other national parks). You have access to the pacific. You have access to every season if you want (e.g. Tahoe or Mammoth for skiing), but you are a short drive away from avoiding it too.
Huge cities, rural areas, culture, quiet, snow, sun, mountains, desert, islands, beaches - literally has everything you could ever want.

I’ve always wanted to live in the northeast so I’ll choose option 1 but 8/9 are enticing

When I retire I'm buying a cozy cottage on the coast in Seaside or maybe in Astoria and watch the barges come in and out of the Colombia. I will become one with the fog.
Will they call you "Mist-er"?

I will see myself out.

I'm good staying in #6 (Texas). That gives me mountains, hill country, beaches, large cities, sports teams, wide open country. Plus all my family is here.

I spent almost 20 years in #3 (Virginia). If my family was there I'd pick that one (pretty much all the same things as listed above, plus better (i.e.: cooler) weather). It's beautiful there, and so much great history, but none of my family is there.

Assuming cost of living isn't an issue it's #9 AINEC. Almost any kind of terrain you want, ocean, Grand Canyon, great weather, Vegas.

Note, I've never been in #1 or 10, but can't imagine my answer would change. Don't want to live anywhere even further north or deal with the frequent rain of the PNW.

Also in this scenario, Iowa's area is getting dead last. But to be fair, we're being anchored down by Kansas and (especially) Nebraska. Missouri largely sucks outside of StL, KC and maybe the Ozarks. But you can find lakes with way less white trash rednecks elsewhere. And I can catch my Cardinals and Blues when they're on the road.

I like your poll but wish you had allowed multiple picks (maybe 3 or 4).

I currently live in Zone 3, and I like it here. But I could easily see living in 10, 1 or parts of 5 as perfectly acceptable alternatives.

The thing is, there's a state in every Zone that would be acceptable. I mean Zones 4 and 6 are pretty awful, but even they have some nice places.

7 is the only hard no for me.

Also, going to Hawaii would be a wonderful change of pace and it’d be a lot less crowded under OP’s travel rules.
