Becht wants to get Howard over 1000 yards

Becht brought up a lofty goal this week regarding what Howard can accomplish in Year 2.

"Hopefully I can get him over 1,000 yards receiving," Becht said.

The Nittany Lions haven't featured a 1,000-yard producer at the position since 2021 All-American Jahan Dotson. In fact, no Penn State receiver has reached even 750 yards since then.

In 2024, when Iowa State reached the Big 12 title game, Becht connected with a pair of 1,000-yard receivers in Jayden Higgins (1,183) and Jaylin Noel (1,194).

Then Higgins and Noel turned pro, and that pass attack output dipped in 2025, when Becht dealt with shoulder injuries and ISU increasingly leaned on Hansen's rushing impact. Still, Eskildsen and Sowell had some strong moments as first-year Cyclones starters and both bring that shared experience with their QB to Penn State.

"What we're expecting is to have multiple 1,000-yard receivers this year," Becht said.

Howard finished 2025 as a "stock-up" figure for a program in transition, and that his trajectory has sustained. He continues to validate the view that he was a crucial retention piece for PSU, worth a significant financial investment to keep the Florida native on campus.

It’s been quite pathetic. There was a period of time from Godwin through Dotson and Washington that I considered Franklin to have really improved the reputation of our WRs over the Paterno era. Dotson and Washington were the last receivers to have significant success vs OSU in big games. Ever since, it’s been putrid and embarrassing.

I am much more concerned with three of the WRs and two of the TEs each getting between 400-800 receiving yards and some TDs; then three RBs have between 150-200 receiving yards. Spreading the ball around like that keeps defenses off balance. That's around 3,800 yards of team receiving. Couple that with the RBs combined rushing yardage of 2,000 yards and you have a prolific offense. Possible? We shall see.

PSU averaged around 360 yards per game last year. ISU was around 390. Neither of which is all that great. If they were to average 400 per game that’s 4800 total yards so I’d assume we’re more likely to have 5 receivers with 4-600 yards than 1 guy with 1000+

Yeah, no doubt. However, when a players makes those kinds of statements in the press, winning games seems to be secondary because they worry about stats more then helping their team win. Especially the bigger games. Just sayin' I am worried and I hope I am proven wrong. Last year I brought up that I attended an open practice and the team looked like poop. Low and behold, the season was poop starting with the first game!! Anyhow, it worries me when players focus on stats in the media. Then again the media sux balz with their questions and sound bites. Have to look thru history and see if those that win big made statements about stat goals. Gave me something to do at my boring/unmotivating job I am grinding away at until retirement! I mean where's the motivation Bob?? :cool: 😂

I don’t give a sh^t what the numbers are. Just win baby. They have a veteran team and they need 10-11 wins minimum this year to get some excitement and momentum going for the future.

Whaatttt, I had no idea ISU outperformed PSU on offense despite basically all of ISU’s offense being injured.

2024 Allar finished with a completion % of 66.5 ....Becht 58.6. According to the coaching staff here, PSU didn't have a single WR and Becht had 2 NFL talents. Proceed to illustrate the facts I'm missing. I see ISU passing 5-7 in Big Twelve in 2024 PSU is comparable if not better in Big 10 standings.
2024 ISU finished 7th in points scored in the conference. I don't think the plan is to bring back "air Coryell."

It's not even a worry at all to me, it was a soundbite clip where he was trying to prop up a young WR to get him excited IMO. If you think any player up there isn't thinking W's first, more importantly the QB isn't thinking about W's first....you're projecting a bit IMO. Every position room grades and tracks players along with setting goals beyond W's for the year....it's a stat driven sport so I don't mind these comments at all.

RB's and OL want the RB's to get over 1000 yards, doesn't even need to be said....it's kind of a known. LB's want X amount of tackles, forced fumbles, tackles, and picks. DB's want PBU's and INT's....it is a part of the game across the board. DL want TFL's and sacks....etc. OL want to grade out well every single game. That comment isn't going to win or lose a single game....it was a talking point for people to chew on in the offseason but is irrelevant to what will occur on the field. Every players up there including the staff knows what the main stat that matters is. Not only to the fans, but the team overall knows W's are the expectation at any program with any decent HC.

No doubt it has been terrible.

Hopefully with a seasoned and talented QB and an OC who likes the deep ball we will see real improvement. It could be the difference between 10-2 and 8-4.

I look forward to a run heavy offense. I think we'll see alot of 12 and 13 personnel, since TE (barring injury) should be the real strength, That doesn't preclude the occasional shot down the field. I think unfortunately, a key asset could beBecht running ( I like making college Ds account for the QB) but the QB room is not a strength and protecting RB will be priority #1. In short, this Offense may be more like 2024 than many wish to admit.

And he dominated games when Terry Smith took over. It must have been Franklin's idea to keep him from "shooting. "

You could be right. I just hope the passing game is thought out, unpredictable for a defense and gets all the receivers involved to include the RBs.
