I'm beginning to wonder if creating controversy is a business strategy for the WNBA?

Reality is that they're far more relevant & interesting with this type of stuff going on than if they were just normal. The league sucks to watch, so becoming the equivalent of women's wrestling is probably a good business move
I haven’t said that here yet, but I am absolutely sure that is part of it. Not saying that there aren't various people involved who are acting bizarre of their own accord, but the WNBA, ESPN, etc wants this to keep going on.

Its very possible.

Caitlin Clark made the league somewhat relevant and they have treated her like crap. Everything that came with the excitement of Caitlin Clark is gone. Teams were having to move their games vs. Indiana to bigger arenas. Instead of leaning into that, they have gone full throttle against it. But last night in Seattle was different. I believe that there are demons working against the nuclear family structure. What happens at a WNBA game in a liberal city across the country doesn't directly affect me, but the culture rot does.

I have daughters who were pretty good high school athletes. I have strong opinions on the culture of women's sports and what it has become. If you think we are shielded from this, spend some time in the USA Volleyball circuit. There is a Boys team (Bayou Boys) in New Orleans that plays in the girls division with the stipulation that they have to play one year up (15 year old boys have to play in the 16 year old girls division). We were in a quarterfinal with a chance to play them in a semifinal. Myself and other fathers were fully prepared to pull our girls off the court. We lost the quarterfinal. The boys team went on to win the tournament. The tournament organizers had to pull their championship photo down off Facebook because of "all the hate"

When you get to national tournaments, you see the one transgender on otherwise girls teams.

Careful. They'll call you paranoid for pointing out the very obvious and active agenda being pushed aggressively.

I will refrain from posting my real thoughts on it. But elite female athletes are suppressing their menstrual cycles to perform better. That has lasting effects. My oldest daughter's knees were destroyed by high school volleyball. She had a chance to play small college and decided that she wanted to be able to pick up my future grandchildren without pain.

That would be interesting if true, and if there was maybe an element of fun or humor in any of it. But that's not it.

It's not a well thought-out business strategy for people like this. Anger and emotion, no tolerance for opposing views - it's all they know and how they live. They take pride in it. There is no patience, love, or empathy for people who disagree - just pure hatred and rage that can't be controlled. Because these two young girls support something that is in opposition to her views, she "had" to speak up. And cuss and spit at them. It's in her DNA.

Before anyone wastes time trying to make this about politics - yes, there are people on both sides of the political spectrum who act this way - and I hate seeing anyone who acts like a child throwing a tantrum. I'm embarrassed when anyone on my side does it, because I believe we should be above it. Being an actual adult (not to mention rich, with things at risk), you'd think this lady could have just ignored the signs and walked away, and no one would have ever known about it. But nope, she just had to lash out.

Point is, I don't think people like her think ahead enough to make it any kind of strategy - they just act in the moment on pure emotion and anger. I hate that the world has so many people like this these days. We're becoming a nation of petulent children who can't control themselves.

Earlier I posted that 'ignore' was your friend. It's true on this board and it's true in life too.

Oh look it’s a thread Dorn doesn’t like.

#passiveagressive
I'm fine with the thread. It's all this new-found interest in the wnba I find interesting.

What I do find a bit peculiar is how often you call me out in threads when I haven't said word one to you. Thanks for reading, I guess.

I think people are looking too deeply into the Clark hate. It’s not really complicated. A large percentage of successful woman absolutely hate other successful women, especially if they are the new viral sensation of success. Ask a successful woman if she prefers a male boss or a female boss. Don’t be shocked by the common response.

White, straight, midwestern. None of that compares to them all being women.

What was the reasoning for that? Not enough boy volleyball teams, but the tourney didn't want to lose entry fees?

FWIW, the league has barred her from attending the next 5 games.

Something I learned, they play in Climate Pledge Arena. Color me unsurprised…
And fined an "undisclosed amount." Apparently this was a bit much bad publicity even for the WNBA. Of course the team statement shows no apology or remorse.
"We respect the league's decision to fine and suspend co-owner Celeste Keaton," the Storm said in a statement Thursday. "We remain committed to creating a welcoming and respectful environment for anyone who attends a Storm game."

Everyone except Sophie Cunningham fans.

Interestingly- Amazon is who named it that. Amazon named it 'Climate Pledge' as an effort to promote a partnership Amazon has.

I cant imagine saying 'hey kids, what to go see Foo Fighters at Climate Pledge?'. I would probably just call it 'Seattle Center' or not call it anything.
...but I also still say 'Sears Tower' in Chicago because thats what it is, damnit!

I don't see this as interest in the WNBA. If anything, it's turning more people off to it, unless the Indiana Fever are playing.

Is the WNBA creating controversy, or is outrage media pushing anything it can find and is more than happy to push outrage issues regardless of which league is involved?
NBA, NFL, MLB, WNBA, USWNT(US women's soccer), etc etc etc - they all generate a ton of outrage content.
Anything controversial in any of those leagues generates endless hours of outrage content through youtube, IG, FB, TikTok, etc etc.

The WNBA is on another level of outrage content right now because...
- it is in season so plenty of content is generated.
- women's sports inherently contains popular outrage topics.
- people who dont actually care about women's basketball but love to be easily outraged over socio-political content are lapping it up.

The narratives that have been manufactured around WNBA 'issues' is wild because they clearly fall along current outrage issues that generate a ton of content and views. It doesnt matter whether the narratives are true or not. It doesnt matter whether the narratives are actually complex or not.
The established narratives will be packaged into content which generates the most outrage and engagement, regardless of truth or nuance.

It's never surprising to me when it turns out that someone on Team Acceptance and Coexistence turns out to be against acceptance and coexistence when they're dealing with something they don't like.

let's just go there......
1. it's women
2. reason and accountability out the door (what is that Jack Nicholson movie?)
3. Clark brought positive attention to the league, and the women that could benefit from it, hated it, and have actively tried to destroy it
4. it's women
5. add on top of that, it's liberal white women and lesbians.....talk about a group that seems to want to actively destroy everything
6. I really like Sophia Cunningham......she makes sense to me

trying to make a thread about the WNBA make any sense is like trying to convince me that tofu is better than a medium rare NY strip, and I actually don't need all these guns

The official reason is there aren't enough boy volleyball teams in the region, and they have to travel out of region so much.

When they are 11 year olds playing 12 year old girls, honestly there isn't a lot of difference. But 15 year old boys jump higher, hit harder and play a different game than 16-18 year old girls. Its dangerous.

Having security throw the teenage girls out is bad enough, but spitting in the face of those girls. That dad has more restraint than I would have.
Based on your comment, I definitely thought the girls were thrown out of the game and the owner literally spat in the girl's faces.
I thought those things because you said those things.
I didnt see any reports that said the girls were thrown out of the game or that they were spat on.

Since I didnt know this happened until reading this thread, I am behind. I read a few articles about it.
So to recap...

- A couple teens got front row seats and held up signs thanking Cunningham for saying something they agree with.
- A team owner yelled at the girls and used a swear word because the team owner presumably dislikes the messaging.
- The girls were not spat on by the team owner.
- The girls were not thrown out of the game.
- The team owner is suspended from attending 5 games.

It looks like the team owner misbehaved and is being rightfully punished. Perhaps more should be done as a punishment?...I wouldnt think twice at that.

If my son was happy about beating an all girls team with his all boys team, I would consider myself a failure of a father.
