It doesn't cost that much, unless you are Bryce Harper or similar. Carson Boleman was drafted first round in this years draft. He is from SC. I'm sure as a freshman they knew he was good and he probably played with Canes national teams. The expense and travel isn't that much. It's certainly a good bit out of your pocket, but most people can handle it.
I saw one quote that is applied to many things, but in this case:

Aside from the money, I think about the time investment.
I have one friend whose daughter did travel soccer. Whatever the cost to play was, along with going to camps etc, they were always...always...on the road up and down the east coast. Just a massive, massive time investment (with all the associated secondary costs: gas, meals, hotels, wear and tear on vehicle). When all was said and done, she signed with a DIII team.
For a lot of kids travel soccer is just to get better at the game and have fun and play at the HS level, it does take time but in SC alot of leagues end up having the games in Florence, Myrtle Beach, Columbia, Charleston, Greenville, you can day trip most if you so choose, unless its a weekend tournament.
I am doing a lot of trips with one son now. As much as its a pain to travel, I am getting a lot of time with a son who will be out of the house sooner rather than later.
It'll be nice if he also gets a Scholarship.
maybe the just enjoyed it and gave them time together as family? Not all have to think their child is going to play D1.
You have to look at it as a cost associated with doing something you enjoy with your kid and your kid enjoys doing with you, nothing more than that. Viewing youth sports and the money put into them as any sort of "investment" in future scholarships or pro sports compensation is the height of foolishness.
My daughter rode horses, probably the most expensive hobby a child can have. Several trainers told me when she was around 11 or 12, "if she sticks with this, she could get a scholarship to college". I told them if I could get her to quit, I could send her to Harvard.
$2,000 is about right for the team fee, but that is paid in the summer. You normally have local fall leagues and spring is the regular season. No one should be paying that for kids prior to HS.
You are smart to spend time with your son, even if you have to sacrifice money and time. You won’t regret building a long-lasting relationship with him; he’ll not only be your son but will be a friend.
All these travel teams they do promote more family time together, hopefully good coaching and good experiences with other players that they will never forget.
Life hack: parents can spend just as much, even more time, with their kids at home. Actually doing things. For free.
Or do both? The travel team is something my one son really enjoys. I enjoy that he enjoys it, and I suspect he enjoys that I enjoy him enjoying it.
Edit: I should add, I am seeing your point. Especially if someone is complaining about the expenses. You dont HAVE to do it. For me and my family, its working and has worked well.

I terribly dislike hotels now because of travel ball. Best thing we ever did was rent a vrbo. Between both my boys we were in Charleston for 10 days. Nothing like vacation at the ball field and eating and hanging out where all the other parents wanted to be. No thanks. Glad that is over.
