Josh Pastner is pitching investors to be the unofficial owner of UNLV basketball for $12M. He says it's much cheaper than owning a NBA team and you will have full access and clout of an owner and a tax write off.

I applaud him for the sales pitch and for reaching out to investors beyond alumni. That's a smart play. What he doesn't say is unlike NBA owners, there is no chance to earn revenue from your team or recoup money by selling the asset down the road. Also doesn't say it but the $12M is likely an annual price tag.

What do you think of this approach?

I like the articles use of the word “invest” LOL. Is something with no return potential an “investment” now?

Great idea. If this works I’m going to try to sell ownership of my fantasy football team. I’ll of course still be in charge of (mis)managing it.

I’ve said this numerous times here. It’s the only logical end for all this. They can say what they want but if a guy comes with $12 million and says he wants part of the revenue, he’s getting it.

Sounds short sighted and desperate to me.

And as you say, you own NOTHING! lol.

I would change the wording a bit, to "Hey, rent my team for $12 million a year!" Rent vs Buy...and even then you get (basically) nothing for it.
