Who has had the most hype of any incoming UK football player and ended up being a bust ?

Elam was my first thought. Although it was really just 1 recruiting service and an Alabama offer that sent his expectations sky high.

Id also add, most of the highly touted QBs that Stoops recruited were disappointments.

Al Baker (RB) from Cadiz, KY (1985). He was projected to be really good with excellent speed and size at 6-1 220lbs. If I remember he had injury issues that kept him from ever becoming great. But he did play at UK for 4 years and was drafted by the Jets in 1991.

This falsehood has been carried on forever. It's shameful. He injured his back against Southern Miss after he'd thrown 5 TD's in the 1H. He was never the same player and came up the sport. But if this **** makes you feel better, go ahead & keep it up.
Falsehood? Nah. He wasn't good. Four TD passes against a bad team. Wow. Five total TD passes for his UK career, injury or not. He was a bust point blank.

Jalen Whitlow ('12 Dual-Threat QB) has to be on the T10 list.
As does Reese Phillips ('13 QB), but his mainly was due to injuries (including major Achilles injuries).

Whitlow was only a three-star and was ranked as the #20 recruit out of Alabama, the #12 dual-threat QB and #608 overall in the country. He played 2 years.
Reese Phillips was only a three-star and was ranked as the #36 recruit out of Tennessee, the #76 pro-style QB and #1792 over all in the country.

Who was the 6-6 guy who was a place kicking block specialist & then left after one year? I thought he was going to really be special.

Then there was the unheralded guy from East?West? Carter that was starting on the OL by midway thru his true FR year, then turned around and left the team & went home, never to be heard from again.

A lot of quarterbacks Ryan Mossakowski from the end of the Brooks, start of the Joker years. Pretty much every quarterback after Levis. The guys like Jamarion Wilcox that couldn't tie his shoes and was arrested for sexual abuse. Then guys like Curtis Pulley after Andre Woodson and Jason Hatcher out of Trinity were primed for big roles before arrests.

Matt Elam, Drew Barker, Aaron Boyd, and Morgan Newton to name a few.

Not a player, but the "coach in waiting" title for Joker Phillips took the wind out of my sails for years.

Matt Elam is one who comes to mind...
I remember the QB who looked good Barker, but broke his back early on and was never the same. You can’t really blame that on his development. He was a high four star and highly regarded. Barion Brown had some hype and he really never lived up to his physical capabilities.

We’ve had lots of overhyped QB recruits that went bust over the years. Patrick Towles and Morgan Newton being two that immediately come to mind.
Yes! Wasn’t Newton from Indy? I remember we had an Indy QB who was highly ranked that was crap and couldn’t remember his name.

Did Calzada have any hype last off season? Because any amount of hype for that bum was too much.
I still can’t believe that is who Stoops choose to pay to save his job, man he sucked. He already had plenty of P5 tape that showed he sucks and no amount of D3 TD’s and passing yards would ever change that. What a waste of a million bucks.

He actually was injured on the opening drive against New Mexico State in game 3 resulting in an interception. First game was Southern Miss and was a doozy. UK blew a 35-10 lead. The team seemed to check out and Barker had a INT and two fumbles in the second half after four TDs in the first. He followed that performance with a 3 INT 2/10 game at Florida where Sthephen Johnson got his first minutes. Maybe he gets some hate for his off the field antics before that season and all the hype he had coming in, but his performance before injury did not help.

Goodwin was a much bigger bust than Elam. Elam at least got on the field and contributed but ended up just being a really big kid who wasn't a great athlete. And he was a really big recruiting win early for Stoops when Stoops was trying to gain momentum to get the program building started.
Did Goodwin ever get on the field more than a dozen snaps? He was a distraction with a poor attitude because the kid just didn't want to play football. And it's amazing that coaches from so many schools got snowed by his handlers because the kid's heart was never in it.
The Newton/Mossakowski was a weird one because it seems they were the same class and the excitement that UK had pulled off a 5-star and a 4-star QB in one class just seemed the start of something special and then it wasn't.

He came to UK in 2014 behind established starter Towles. Was his backup in 2015. With Towles gone, his first start was against that bad SM team. Plays a half & is hurt. Up 35-0. He goes out & that bad SM team outscores us 44-0. Guess Barker was useless. They go 7-6 against their non-P5 opponents. Great? No. Bad? Also no. What's bad is that you're FOS.
