3 out of 4 right, but we never played Carlisle. The 4th one is Princeton. You have to admit -- Air Force and Princeton are unlikely candidates!
OSU has also never beaten Florida. Sorry to say, neither have we.
They've also never beaten Florida St. or Georgia; we've never played those teams.
Damn I even looked for Princeton because I sure we played in the Dark Ages but missed it somehow (college football reference)
It was the 1986 game in Francis Peay's first year. We had a couple more OOC's scheduled against the Ivies ... I think one was vs Dartmouth in 1990, but the Ivy League freaked out after the Princeton game & they were all cancelled. We won that Princeton game something like 37-6.
Remember when he won 4 games after Green left and we thought he was the answer?
Ah, the memories
The ‘86 team easily could have been a winning season, but they shot themselves in foot multiple times. Leading in the last minute against Purdue, they had a punt blocked and PU kicked a winning field goal. Tied against Iowa late in the game, an Iowa DT hit Mike Greenfield’s arm and the ball squibbed out for the winning Iowa TD in a 7 point game. At Minnesota, the Cats scored at the end of the first half to go up 17-0, gave up a TD kickoff return as time ran out, and collapsed. Against Duke, they failed to score on 5 possessions within the 25 (3 inside the 15) and lost 17-6. The team also had a one score loss to Wisconsin. They were beaten soundly by OSU (30-9) and Indiana 24-7, neither one the slaughters we had grown accustomed to. It was, I think, the most competitive team of the 24 year drought.
NU "sent" the marching band to Princeton-the announcer called out"Now the Northwestern Marching Band- a single trumpeter wearing a purple Beret playing "Go U Northwestern"entered the open end of old Palmer Stadium
NU played poorly but still won handily.
My favorite "could have been" of the Dark Ages is the '79 team. They were terrible like so many of the teams of that era (almost goes without saying when the '81 seniors were the ones with the infamous 1-42-1 record), but they randomly held two ranked opponents (Ohio State and Purdue) to 20 points or less in one-score games, even while they went winless in conference. Can only imagine the shock in Columbus had they pulled that one off...
I think that was just because teams didn't bother to gameplan for us because we were so bad.
