The last few years? We use to hunt the shart out of them in the 80’s. Are they still around or did the go the way of quail? Timberdoodles for you Yankees

They still have reasonably healthy populations. Not a bird I’ve ever hunted. Have been flushing more quail recently than in years past.

I haven’t seen one in years, like 15-20. Granted I’m not out walking fence rows like I used to so they could still be there and I’m the problem.

Burned about 15 total acres 2 years ago. My son and I saw a good many right at dark in that burn while deer hunting last season.

Interesting and strange looking birds.

We used to shoot them while quail hunting, but at least in the areas I hunt in Oktibbeha County, they are as rare as wild quail and honest politicians these days.

I see one from time to time right at day break and right before dark when I’m deer and duck hunting. There was one day I was deer hunting in the delta a few years ago and jumped 8 or so separate birds. Most I’ve ever seen.

Used to see them all the time when hunting in the Tombigbee River bottoms. Most of the time we kicked them up around the cane thickets. Haven hunted there in many years now and never see them on my place in Eastern Noxubee County.

I shot one about 25 years ago in south MS on an afternoon wood duck hunt. That was the last one I have seen in MS.

I know some people that hunt them in NJ and PA but they may shoot a hand full every year.
