OT: Rutgers Facilities Construction Projects; Status of 2030 Plan, Brower Demo, New CA Quad, etc.

I’m dreaming of the day when they take Easton Ave and turn it into our real “State Street-esqe college town. Just like we see at so many Big Ten and SEC schools. Get rid of the street parking on both sides and extend the sidewalk. Add some trees and string lights and boom, you have a gathering point. This is where our students would take to the streets when we finally win a national championship, where we could have Homecoming Parades (like every Big Ten and SEC school does besides us). Build a parking deck off to the side on any of the empty lots and you’re golden. Just last year visiting Nebraska, Wisconsin, Blacksburg VA they are all like this.
RU has a unique look that it can’t get away from because of its purposely disjointed nature. I spent 90% of my 4 years on Cook and Douglass buildings, the rest at Busch and Livingston in 4 years I never took a course on the college Ave/Rutgers campus…like it or not the school looks the way it does as a function of so many different places. I think it’s what gives it its unique look and feel
Red oaks? Given to Cook grads. Would be fitting.
Graduating seniors at Cook College (now the Rutgers School of Environmental and Biological Sciences - SEBS) receive a red oak seedling as a graduation tradition that started in 1982. These little trees symbolize growth and are traditionally presented during the school convocation ceremony.
Too big. It’s more complicated than people think. You need to pick a tree where the roots do not go too deep and get into water lines and sewer lines. You don’t want the tree so large that it has to be cut down because it blocks powerlines or grows too wide, etc. They have specific city trees that you can pick from that fit well in cities.
the city has tried several times to plant trees in this Easton corridor. sidewalks get cut, trees planted, grates installed. Then zero care/maintenance. the branches get broken by drunk college kids. the grates get overgrown with weeds. Then the tree start to die. Then the grates get moved, broken and create trip hazards as well as looking like crap. Then there's an ugly hole on the sidewalk. I would suggest oversized planters to hold the greenery. Nice street lights( like near Verve) would be nice, if they were maintained. As skoolie says, even if the tree is successful, it then has to get chopped cause of power lines. As a business owner, I also don't want trees blocking my storefront from the view of the public.
The same property owners that can't/don't maintain their properties don't take care of the trees/grates/weeds etc. The city trash pick up of public trash cans is a mess. After a busy weekend the cans are overflowing. Trash guys come by and all the stuff on top falls to the ground to be added to the stuff on the ground already around the cans. That all gets left there. I have personally moved public cans away from my properties because they are an eyesore and filthy and a mess. Then there's the dumb company that throws plastic bag covered "newspaper/coupons" onto porches/sidewalks. They are not addressed to anyone. They are legally littering all over the city. I call the 800 number and ask for my addresses to removed from distribution. sometimes it works, something it doesn't.. I've complained to the town council. They say it's legally protected free speech and powerless to stop it??

… and some folks want more public/government services, smh. What should happen is outsource trash collection and if Alpha Trash company does a shiity job then fire them and hire Delta Trash company, etc. Things would clean up quickly (unless of course the government trash inspector is a no show job or gives the contract someone based on their donations).
More government/public services is NEVER the answer, but the romanticized idea of the government giving a

Just unbelievable how inept Rutgers Administration is. A colleague's son is starting at Rutgers this fall: he ended up being housed on Cook (Perry Hall) although he wanted to be on College Ave. I was explaining to him how College Ave doesn't have a true dining hall right now, that they closed the only dining hall that serviced that campus 4 years ago and haven't done a damn thing with it yet.
This is unacceptable. Cahill has been mayor for 30+ years.
I lived in Weehawken for 8 years. Small city like New Brunswick. Long time mayor. The Weehawken garbage trucks are followed by guys walking with shovels and brooms who make sure every piece of garbage is removed. Same thing with Stack in Union City.
That being said, New Brunswick is nicer than when I was there in late 1990s, but so are most NJ cities.
No apparent progress
. Sad how slow this project is moving or not moving... Construction was supposed to start 2 years or so after the June 2022 or June 2023 demo started. Did the utilities work get done? Is Stonier staying? Anyone have an update on when Brower will be demoed and construction will start on the new CA quad?No it was awesome…loved cook and Douglass areas…never cared for the RU campus and back then Busch and Livingston were not what they are today. Don’t project what you thought should be a good experience onto others. It displays insane narrow mindedness sunshine
Perry Hall is a great dorm. Big rooms, AC. Right next to the Cook gym and athletic Fields. Neilson dining hall has the best food IMO and it's a quick walk.
Cook/Douglass is very underrated.
