You try to pass someone on the highway and they speed up?
What insecurity is in play here?

Those are the same buttholes that slow down when after they pass you.
Those people are second worst to left lane loungers…unless they do it in the left lane. Then they are true scum of the earth.
I think they just don’t pay attention and when they’re being passed they realize they’ve slowed down.
I think that could be it. I also think some are just aholes.
Yep. They don't use cruise and have no idea how slow they are going.
Also the same type of villain that if you gently tap horn at red light that is green for a while that they are oblivious to m they get exasperated and angry throwing their arms up with “what?” and even giving you the bird.
I’m sure there are some ASHOLES but I chalk most of it up to unawareness. One time I passed the same lady 5 times between Omaha and Lincoln bc she would speed way up and pass me and then slow way down. Over and over for 40 miles.
I just don’t think she was paying much attention.
They're usually paying attention to their phone.
I regularly drive 2 lane state and county highways, and the no cruise thing is real. 45 mph up a hill, 70 mph down a hill. As noted when you pass them, they speed up. It's not just olds either, it's pretty much everyone.
Women in minivans that don’t use their cruise especially on any highway going 50 to 60 up a hill and 70 to 90 down a hill. Add in the pass issue where they keep speeding up with your speed as you pass them to the point I’ve had to go 90 on an interstate just to get past them, and of course they slow down once you’ve gotten by them. There are also the ladies that speed up, slow down while driving on the interstate so you have to pass them multiple times and they pass you multiple times due to their lack of cruise control use. I just put the hammer down for a few miles to get the hell away from them so I don’t have to deal with their dumbasssery.
Men, they just love to hold up traffic if someone wants to go faster than them by lounging in the left lane going slow with traffic in the right lane speeding up and slowing down. They think they are speed police and think they should control the flow and speed of traffic. Get in the right lane and let people pass. It’s not hard. And don’t pull the tractor trailer style of driving by not getting out of the left hand lane if there is traffic 100 yards ahead of you. Get the hell out of the left lane and let people pass. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to pass on the right because someone doesn’t want to get over. It’s a simple driving concept, do it.

Also, the people that stay 10 feet off your left rear qtr panel, even though you have changed speeds, so you have to break behind a semi so they can slowly pass you on the left.

Scenario: I’m behind another car - maybe even a line of cars - passing a slower car in the RH lane. I’m maintaining a prudent distance. Jack A.ss comes flying up on the right trying to cut in front of me where he’ll have to hit his brakes causing me to hit mine causing the car behind to hit theirs all the way down the line…
I’m from the “no cuts” school so I tighten up the space between my car and the car in front of me. What say you?

I’m mostly referring to this situation:
You are in the left lane and come up on a left lane laggard. You wait a bit for them to get over, but they don’t. So you pass on the right and then as you start to pass they speed up, forcing you to speed up even more to get back over.
Things I've noticed through the years...
1) The speeding up thing, when Prius' were first introduced, it seemed as if their owners didn't like being passed on 4 lane highways and would speed up to match the passer. Doesn't happen much any more with them, probably because of the proliferation of electric vehicles since their introduction.
2) I firmly believe that non cruise control drivers on 2 lane highways tend to want some other driver set their pace. They let you pass them, they then speed up and stick close to you until one of you turns off.

Be more specific.
If there's plenty of room on the highway, and plenty of room for passing, and someone speeds up to apparently attempt to not allow you to pass them ... then they're the equivalent of folks who sit in the passing lane, going slower than the traffic behind them, or folks who don't return their shopping carts to a corral/the store. They should be publicly humiliated and, if a serial offender, eradicated.
If, however, it's a crowded, busy highway, and you're maintaining a bit of distance between you and the car in front of you so you have the ability to brake comfortably if there's a sudden slow down/stop (as is often the case in those types of situations), and some jackwagon decides his lane is too slow, so he's going to push his way into your lane, creating a situation where you need to slow down to let him in, or you need to slow down after he forces his way in in order to maintain a safe(r) distance between you and that car, then that POS can rot in his lane in perpetuity. In this case, it's important to be aware of whether or not an exit is coming up, because the guy may just be trying to get over to get to his exit ... but if not, screw them. I'm giving a little boost to the accelerator to ensure he can't get in, if it's safe to do so.
There’s a long stretch of four lane road I traverse regularly. A few weeks ago I was heading to the grocery store - cruise on as always. There was a car in the RH lane that I was overtaking so I got into the LH lane to pass. She sped up to pace me. So I sped up because I had a right turn a mile up the road. She sped up. I sped up. She still paced me - no f’n idea what she was thinking. I floored it, passed her, got back into the RH lane, and she immediately slowed to her previous speed.
It was odd enough to be memorable.
