This WR will keep getting broken. The top 1500 guys in the NCAA track are around 3:31. Their last 400 is about 51 or 52 seconds so they are running the last 100 in about 13 add 9 more meters for another second and they are within a second and a half to two seconds from this mark.

Looked like he still had some more left to go faster.

What are those Europeans doing running a mile anyway. They use the metric system ffs.

The U.K. still uses miles instead of km. They have a significant advantage when they run the mile and European competitors run the km in the same race. I’m surprised that no one has caught onto this.

Roger Bannister breaking the 4 minute mile is probably the greatest.. (checking current world cup results) ...British athletic accomplishment ever so they still have a soft spot for the mile. Still not run nearly as much as the 1500, so the record get broken a little less.

For a proud PSU moment, former Lion Brannon Kidder was the pacer.

My best time was 5:17.76. To go downstairs and check my mail.
My best time was around 5 minutes. But I was an hurdler and long jumper, not a distance runner.

Our HS record at the time was 4:24 by a guy who I was on the team with. I saw guys running miles in the 4 minutes and mid teens by people like future Penn Stater at the time, Alan Scharsu, who ran for Austintown Fitch HS (a conference rival of ours). I never saw anyone run like him in HS. He was just amazing - ran the 2 mile somewhere around 9:15 as a freshman. He ended up setting the 2 mile world record for a 16 year old with a time of approximately 8:45. At Penn State, I believe he was the highest place American finisher in the NCAA Crosscreek country championship.

A name I haven't thought about in quite some time. He had a heck of a high school career:

8:45 for the 2 mile as a high schooler is an elite time. Doing it as a 16 year old would put you in the top 5 if not #1 nationally still today.

They run the 1600 meter in high school which is 9 meters short of a mile I think. Just add about a second and a half to convert to a mile.

D1 colleges will look for about a 4:10 or better for the 1600 meter. All the distance guys on PSU's team probably were running about that if not even faster like a 4:05 1600 meter time. The CA state champ in the 1600 meter this year ran a 4:03.

Of note is the times get much faster once in college. To be one of the better D1 (not elite but a good runner) 1500 meter runners you should be running about a 3:45. That would break the 4 minute mile barrier.

Runners get most of their income from the shoe deals (with incentives for things like breaking world records). I wonder if he was trying to be funny?

I wonder how much of the gap with the old record is attributable to track surface and shoe technology improvements.
