Cam Young has posted -9 two hours ahead of the overnight leaders finishing.

Current leader is SW Kim at -10 and the course is getting drier and faster. No serious studs in contention anymore and overnight leader Sam Burns is leaking oil.

This could be a rare instance where an early finisher posts low and wins.

I shouldn’t have written off Scheffler as he birdies 16 to get to -7. Still doubt he can get to Young’s number.

ETA and the rough on 17 has eaten SS. He’s toast.

Young very well could win it with that early low score.

Scottie has just been off this year. Eamon Lynch charges it up to “life”….second child, new routines, new priorities. Nothing physically wrong with him.

Scheffler just got a huge break. Terrible shot and he gets relief from hitting into a temporary structure area and will have a makeable birdie putt.

Weekend hackers don’t get that deal.

And he rolls it in. Needs a very rare birdie at 18.

Honestly, it feels to me like Burns is the only guy with a chance outside of Young. Doubt SS birdies 18 and I don’t see Kim bringing this home. He’s now -9 facing a long par putt.

This is crazy. Hit your ball in a patch of rough that has not been trampled by the fans, and you wind up with a 2 stroke penalty. Hit a ball behind a grandstand - and a poor provisional - and you get a birdie.

Gallery saw it go into a temporary structure. The rules say that was the correct ruling. You don’t get a gallery to help find your ball. You don’t have an on course official to make sure rules are followed but it was the correct ruling.

DeChambeau got the correct ruling as well. You cannot trample the grass around your ball to improve your lie, intention does not matter.

You are correct in that neither of those rules would have been applied the same for weekends golfers but it does not make them wrong.

Basically coming down to Fox and Burns with chances to catch Young. Fox is a gutsy player.

And he just tied the lead.

The problem with Sheffler's break is that, without knowing where his ball wound up, we dont know the nearest point of relief from the structure. Seems like there may have been a spot inside the gorse, but free from the obstruction, that was his nearest point of relief.

But, it sounded to me that the R&A had already considered that.

They had a rule already in place for that situation on that hole.

The drop point for any ball in that temporary structure was decided before the tournament started. There was no question of where he was to drop.

The only question was it hit into the temp area. There were witnesses that saw it going in there. That’s all that was required to satisfy the rule.

Same. Im a big fan just based on his speed of play. The Championship on the line and he fired a near perfect approach shot into the 18th while the previous group was still on the green.

I'm so easily distracted that I cant hit until the guys in front of me are out of sight.

I believe somebody found Scheffler's ball on the wild shot as well.

Im a pretty fast player. I walk a lot and keep up with guys in carts with no problem. Ryan Fox would get impatient with me, Im sure. Ive spent more time placing my ball on its mark than he spent placing his ball and putting it in to win The Open.

This is not correct. Even Scottie said there was another area of relief past the stands which would have been a worse angle. When the official gave him the better angle, he ran with it.

He hit it so badly that in went into a temporary obstruction with rules governing everything from entering and options for playing out of it. His options certainly were discussed and he most certainly picked the best one for him as one would do.

I see no controversy other than maybe the rules committee made a horrible rule because it was applied properly.
