2027 High School Class really screwed by 5 in 5.

I had to read your post to know you weren't crazy or something. The thread title said 2017 class.

Don’t understand your point. Isn’t this true of any incoming class now that everyone has 5 years. Less high level scholarships to go around.

I think the ones that may have a case that they got screwed are the ones who didn't medically redshirt (like Hawthorne) last year. I could see a case for a coach saying 'well if I had known this was happening I wouldn't have sat him the whole year'. Apparently Hawthorne had a bum ankle but who knows. I guess you do have to draw a line somewhere but seems there might be a case for currently enrolled players who redshirted one year suing to make them eliminate that year as being one of the 5. I think that makes more of a difference in football than basketball though and not sure I really CARE about it that much, per se. But something to watch perhaps.

Great point & certainly something to watch.
Ky has 14 scholarship players this year & only big Frank will be out of eligibility next year.
So if no one goes pro & or goes into portal, Ky will only have 2 scholarships to offer next year & one of those has already been offered & accepted by a 5 star Hampton.
I believe 2027 recruits will accept offers sooner than normal to make sure they get one of the few scholarships available at the school of their choice.

Attrition especially with how easy it is to move around is a thing now to monitor so who knows how many open spots there will be but the redshirt part is something I wondered about as a potential snag just generally reading the rule. I think the degree it could impact basketball is pretty marginal but (not to mix sports here but doing it anyway) football could stand to benefit for more than 4 games experience. on what was considered a banked year when they could have played more.

Meh, the sky isn’t falling. Those who have the talent and put in the work will get scholarships. It might not be the first, second or even third school on their wish list but they’re still going to get scholarships. Not everybody is going to get significant NIL, nor has it been that way. But the sky isn’t falling.

What schools still have significant NIL money to spend? It's nearly August.

It's ironic how certain people will fight for the players vs the rich institutions and in almost every case the players get screwed and only realize it years after what they perceive was a victory.

Yay kids are getting paid. But a what cost. Kids will leave their 5th school in 5 yrs with no connection to a fanbase. So many will have their money spent by 30, without a degree and connections to a community that would normally have supported their former athletes.

We are starting to see schools cut back on secondary sports which will most likely lead to less scholarships for future athletes. Worrisome for someone that has a daughter being recruited for soccer and another one in cheerleading.

Then you have the trend that seems like its going the way of the NBA. The top 1% earns all the money and the veteran middle men will be lost because teams will fill the remaining roster spots with young cheaper talent.
