The total shatters the University’s past record of $563.5 million, achieved in 2024-25, and reflects commitments from almost 241,000 alumni, friends, fans, corporations and foundations, a number that is also a new record. The enthusiasm of Penn Staters extended to membership in the Penn State Alumni Association, which ended the year at 176,356 strong, just 71 short of the all-time high.

“This achievement is a testament to the impact Penn Staters make in Pennsylvania and around the world and the pride our community shares in advancing the University’s mission,” said President Neeli Bendapudi. “We are deeply grateful for the generosity of our supporters, whose belief in Penn State and commitment to excellence will strengthen our University for generations to come. Through their gifts, donors can help us to transform the educational experience for our students, cultivate a welcoming community, embolden our world-class research, champion health care, and deliver on the promise of our land-grant mission.”

These aspirations, which form the core of the University’s current strategic plan, also will guide the campaign, to be formally announced in 2027. Penn State Board of Trustees Chair David M. I used to give quite a bit every year, probably more than many, and I’m sure quite less than the big donors - about 10K a year. This was not $$$ going to the athletic department. But that gravy train ended years ago for multiple reasons.

Penn State receives about $500 billion per year in Federal grants or contracts. I read that the top schools receive somewhere around $1.5 billion. John's Hopkins gets over $4 billion, mostly from NIH. I guess we're already giving through our taxes. Sending them another $500 seems insignificant but I realize we have 800,000 living alumni.

I've said that from the beginning. Do a $500m stadium upgrade and use the other $200 million for players. $200 million invested at 10% = $20 million per year.

Of course it isn't that easy. The university can only pay $21.5 million. The rest has to come directly from private donations given directly to players or collectives.

FWIW: I think PSU's total Fed Funding (including ARL) is closer to $1 B - but I don't have those numbers readily at hand.
As a whole, Universities saw a huge bump in Fed research funding over the last several years. That would, of course, include PSU. Peer-to-Peer, PSU has declined wrt research funding (again, don't have those numbers readily at hand, but let's say roughly something like 15th largest research funding pool, to 22nd. Something like that.

Dr B had supposedly set a goal, a few years back, of returning PSU to, IIRC, top 15. At last check, that wasn't happening. But time will tell.

Interesting tangent to that:
PSU has, for some time, made the claim that the more research funding they get, the more $$ the University "loses". They say that despite the HUGE "F and A" carve out from research grants (essentially a "tax" equal to 35-40% of the total grant, that goes to PSU administration to cover overhead, and not to doing the actual research) that Penn State "loses money" when they get a government research grant.
(I won't get into all the detail, it has been done before - aside from saying that claims of losing money on research are either specious BS, or, if true, are extraordinarily troubling claims wrt fiscal controls at PSU).
Someone at the Board meetings this week - they are taking place yesterday and today at Penn Tech - - in fact made that claim just yesterday.

Not exactly. Most recent tables, 2024, have PSU's total research funding at 1.3 billion. $860 million was federally funded, with nearly $379 million from the DoD.

Defense Department was also the largest source of funds for Hopkins that year at $1.86 billion

Are you suggesting that Penn State borrow to underwrite NIL because that's how it's largely funding stadium construction? If that's your idea of sound financial management why not have both: rebuild the stadium for $700 million and add another $200 million of borrowing to fund NIL. Gonna need to double that amount to get your desired dollar return and find a money manager who is better than the folks who run PSU's endowment.

I'm saying a lot of the big money donors for the stadium are likely the same people who have the capacity to fund NIL. The problem is there's a limit to what they're willing or able to give. The more they give towards the stadium the less they might be inclined to give to NIL.

Why would it not be legal?

Just because someone has a lot of money doesn't put them in a position to do a NIL deal.

I assume the comment about eliminating education for thousands of Pennsylvanians is the closure of several branch campuses. I hate that but what are they supposed to do if they can't attract enough students? Back when I was college age those campuses had a lot of Vietnam veterans attending on the GI bill. That's mostly gone but the tuition is still lower than main campus and commuters can save $20k per year. I don't know why students would spend that extra money financed by loans but it is what it is.
