I feel badly about my JQ comments now

I was so excited when we signed JQ like most everyone. Then we got to watch his interviews and he seems like such a great kid. Then suffering from PTSD Shaeden Sharpe situation I allowed myself to get very critical. It does appear JQ obviously was not well enough to play last year and is still suffering from his initial injury. We have been burned as fans so much of late, and then watched these super stars at Kansas, and UL set out when they could have benefitted their team in crucial situations.

I am going to try to remind myself to be a little less critical in the future.

His dad's comments weren't the best (even speaking as a dad myself) and that all didn't help. The past phantom/possibly healed injuries of guys as well. But when I saw JQ have that St Johns game then come out and stuff himself TWICE on an attempted dunk, below the rim, against Bellarmine, I never questioned if he was actually hurt or not. Great show to do that otherwise. Understand fans feeling burned from past players but not sure that's the tape you want to put out there. Spurs plan for him confirms it. A risk Pope took. Prefer not too many of those.

He was a desperation signing by Pope. Big miss/Big overpayment.

And he turns around and signs Big France and brings back Kam (though Kam to a lesser extend proved his toughness and willingness to get back on the court for us). Still concerned about Kepnang's long term health on this team.

Why do the some bother you? You may think it was too big a risk and I get that. Others see the bet was on the St. John’s game JQ, which might make some say they could see why “the bet” was made. He lost the bet either way. Just confused why you need EVERYBODY to hold that against him.

There are several bigger issues to do that on.

I think most everyone agrees that last year's team was poorly constructed. Obviously, counting HEAVILY on a guy 6mo after knee surgery was a BIG part of that "poor construction"!
What Pope supporters do understand, and many others fail to acknowledge, is the impact of injuries on his first 2 teams (granted about 40% of last year's games missed were the RISKY choice of bringing in JQ), where both teams had historical level of games missed by players. For that reason, the pragmatic fans consider season 1 a "success", but I'm not sure anyone considers season 2 a "success".

I’m not buying any of this. The whole thing was ridiculous. I’m still a believer in Pope. He’ll do well here, but, this insistence on going in on a half assed player when healthy, was just foolish.
JQ is nothing more than a defensive specialist when healthy. The problem is, he’s never healthy.
When you’re injury prone starting at age 17 for a big guy, it never gets better.

Pope said he would run it back with last years team every time. He’s supposedly a really smart guy, I’m yet to see it.

No one is doing "victory laps" if a kid stays healthy. You can hate on Pope for whatever you want, but IMO, it's ridiculous to rip him over kids getting hurt

JQ was already hurt before he came to UK, and Pope placed an enormous amount of dependency on JQ getting healthy and contributing as a starter.

That was the mistake. Putting all of his eggs into a basket that looked sketchy at best from the get go. Kind of like Collins. Kind of like Stokes. Kind of like Kusturica. Kind of like Crawford.

It is hard for me to hold it against him because I probably would have taken the same chance.

It didn't work out but I thought it was a reasonable risk that he'd be able to return from the injury, ramp up, and help us come crunch time.

We needed the upside swing, it wasn't like we were turning away healthy studs for JQ so it didn't hurt much other than hopes, expectations, budget maybe, and dreams.

If he recovered well we would have had a nice boost, he didn't so we ended up where we were if we didn't try aka with BG and Moreno.

Disappointing but I don't think there is anything to be mad about really, sometimes the cookie crumbles the wrong way.

Teams arent keen on spending close to $10mil and the 20th pick on a guy with pretty shotty knees. I dont think its surprise that the very next day after the draft, talks began circulating that he'd miss part of his rookie season or all of it.

Did the Spurs know this ahead of time? Maybe. But guys like Peat, Taris Reed, Cenac and Zuby were still on the board.

JQ and his camp maneuvered the last 12 months very carefully.

The majority of our fanbase feels the same way but the problem was Pope’s inability to relate the problem to the fanbase.

On the positive side - he did help us beat Ricky fifteeno- who a large portion of this board is disgustingly reinfatuated with.


also, had we passed on him and brought in a healthy center we may not have a confident Moreno coming into year two. He may have rode the bench and transferred out.

Is what it is. This board takes things personally and lashed out at people who don’t deserve it. Many here act like cal and jq stole their wives. The personal attacks look pathetic.
