I'm not sure what the rule is, but I've seen lightning strike up to 30 miles from the parent storm. It's where the saying a bolt out of the blue came from.
Just give everyone a 1 iron.

I was at the 1983 Iron Bowl in Legion Field. Massive thunderstorm with wind gusts over 40 mph. The field was a lake, and the bands went under the stands, but not many people left.

They never told us we were under a tornado warning, or that a deadly tornado hit Oxford, AL, about 60 miles down I-20. I dont think anyone at the game was injured. Not by the weather anyway.

So clearly we should suspend all sporting events within 600 miles of a lightning strike for at least 30 minutes.
that is the obvious answer. as a kid, our parents would be like, "you're good that lightning is still two fields over"...
Is NASCAR a sport? You've gotta have balls to do it, but they don't use a ball. So, no.
We had a similar situation in Starkville, playing Troy (as I recall). Tornado warning, players were surfing on the field, and we managed to lose the game in the 2nd half.
Or we could simply jail all personal injury attorneys for the crime of general assholery.

Holy crap. When I officiated MPSA football, years ago we had JA at PCS first game of the season on a Thursday night. The thunderstorm began as we drove up at 5:30 and dumped what seemed like 6" of rain for two hours. Opening kick was delayed until 10:00 because the lightning just would not move on. Finally finished the game around 12:45. I walked in my house at 3:15 a.m. JA won going away.
Had another game at ACCS vs. Washington School that kicked off around 9:30 because of lightning. Also called a game at Parklane during a tropical storm with no lightning. They played Hillcrest, and Stephen Smith (played baseball at UM) was the Hillcrest QB. I thought PA was going to break him on half, but he kept getting up each time they stuck him.
