Just like with the Ream one, so glad to see this rule change to get that crap out of the game. Obvious simulation should be punished…and dumb to do when you’re already on a yellow.

Genuninely the only likable player I’ve seen this World Cup. Has done more to inspire American soccer youth than the USMNT has done in decades. Now the Cup is predictable and boring. And full of cheats.
Yup. You can’t cry about diving in soccer and then cry when someone gets punished for a clear, stupid dive. The Swiss guy deserved all of that.
Looks like these futbol refs inserted their ugly heads again in the Argentina vs Swiss game. Unnecessary 2nd yellow leads to Argentina getting a man advantage for 40 minutes. Too much of an advantage for the Swiss to overcome.
I agree with the sentiment you don't call that at that juncture. No way are they calling that against Messi at that point if it would be his 2nd yellow.
Of course they’d call it…a completely obvious call. That right there was the textbook example of why the rule is in place.
The term soccer comes from England; it’s just a derivative of the term Association Football, which otherwise was called soccer.
It was inexplicable that Sørloth pulled back allowing the defenders to close rather than pass that ball or take a quicker shot. Utterly stupifying.
Amen to that. I've never heard anyone who follows the sport state they love the diving and lack of accountability. Then when it happens in a big spot, people say it's harsh. Well normalize punishing dives with cards and maybe it slows down. Ignoring it hasn't worked.

And some people wonder why soccer doesn't take hold in the US. Of course, there are a number of things involved but imagine a non-soccer fan in the US casually watching and seeing the Switzerland guy take a dive like that. They'd think, "What sort of lame sport is this??"
It has taken hold, it's not just at the to of the list nor will it ever be here more than likely which is just fine. People wonder why American football hasn't taken off in other parts of the world when you actually only play for about 12 of the 60 minutes. You have guys run for 4 seconds to take 30 seconds off....now I love the sport, but that is what the Euros say about American football. They see rugby as the better alternative in most places and if that bothers you, that is what it is. To say the sport hasn't taken off when millions watch it in non world cup years, watch various leagues, and has one of the highest youth sports participation in it. The people that follow the sport follow various leagues and part of the appeal is watching young Americans play in those leagues.

In this case, the usual call in the middle of the field, had no cards been shown, is "play on". That's why folks called it harsh. This was especially true as VAR was used--and VAR cannot be used to give a yellow, except in this specific case. Had no yellow been given to the Argentine player, VAR could not go back to assign a yellow here. That's why it's harsh.
I didn't mean to imply nobody in the US follows soccer because certainly many people do but they're a very small percentage of the population. Youth participation means nothing if it doesn't translate into participation and interest into adulthood. My point was the casual US fan who may only watch a few World Cup matches at a sports bar won't be drawn into the sport by seeing soccer players take obvious dives. Or by seeing a player writhing in pain on the ground in an attempt to draw a penalty then when the penalty doesn't come, the player jumps up and runs down the field/pitch with no problem whatsoever. It's the same as fans hating when players flop in the NBA. It turns that aspect of the game into more of a performance than a competition.
I love how the Europeans are showing how great the American people are in these cities where we were being told the people are evil and hated the country. The people of Boston, KC, Miami, NY, LA, Dallas.....all have really stepped it up with great hopsitality. It's odd as we have been told over and over how they are awful places run by awful people full of criminals and rapists.
It's almost like that is some awful propaganda where someone is always the enemy. Immigrants, Gay people, Trans people, people living in those cities....odd that the Euros still loved them. Hmmm, something just isn't adding up as these games aren't being played in Shreveport La.. It's funny watching the stupids who love an adjudicated rapist make everything about him first and then project their cult like attitude. Even more so when they think they have a gotcha while licking the boot proving the points of others.

Also, have already heard "reports" that these cities are back to being the wastelands they were before the WC.
Yet had VAR not been used an Argentine would have had a yellow for no reason at all. That is actually harsh. I’m all for them doing exactly what they did and do not consider it harsh at all. It wasn’t even in the box so it was a very dumb dive to begin with.
Thierry has excellent insight but his accent is so strong that I find it hard to understand all of his words. This is not a dig at him, just an observation.

I watched him enough now with Kate Scott and Micah Richard’s during Euefa that I rarely notice it. One of if not the most entertaining sports show on right now. Always good for a laugh.
I know their manager/head coach was not happy with the effort vs Norway. He knows they won't get into the final with the same effort against Argentina in the semis.
