My favorite JL Jones commercial (that always ran during old black and white movies on WLBT, WAPT, WJTV) has him splayed out all over a big bed in the showroom w/ his cowboy hat over his face and one of the Granddaughters is pushing on him trying to wake him up saying "Wake Up, Wake Up Pa Paw, please wake up, its time to do a commercial" and he pops up and says "sorry there folks, this JL Jones bed is so comfortable I dozed off for a minute" blah blah blah. Years later after those the "other PaPaw" Dub Herring from Camper City in Picayune hit the airwaves.

Hell I'm surprised that appliance stores outside of big box stores exist at all these days, much less are desirable enough to be bought out.
I'll drive down to the Oxford store next time I'm in the market. I ******* HATE BUYING APPLIANCES FROM LOWES/HD. You have to roam the store to find someone to find someone to simply ring you up. Don't make it hard for me to give you money. Drives me insane.

It's what Mississippians do. Build it up and sell it off, or move out of state to a better talent pool.
Which is all fine, take the money and run if you want. But it'd be nice if it was also reinvested back into the MS economy. That rarely happens, other than building a mansion in Nowhere County.

That’s not the story here. 2nd generation that has run it most of its existence are dying/getting very old. It was simpjy time to sell and there was a buyer.

I guess I should've clarified that I was making that comment in response to some of the people talking about dollars flowing to State being interrupted.
This business was started when an independent appliance dealer could make money . I.E. before Lowes, Home Depot et al got in the business . This is in no way a "Mississippi" phenomena . It's just a good business decision made by good business men as far as I'm concerned.
it’s pretty incredible that it stayed a viable family owned business as long as it did considering the changes in that industry. Obviously the model is pretty different than it was in the early days.

You guys are probably right. I'm more frustrated in why Cowboy Maloney's can't be the Lowe's or Home Depot.
Seems like every time we have a chance of that, we sell out or move. McRae's, Steinmart, Viking, Back Yard Burger and the biggest of course, Sanderson. I understand how business works, just wish we had some type of economic powerhouse like that in Jackson and/or Mississippi. Heck it seemed like we had a banking presence then one of those Tupelo ones sell out too.

I am going to guess that is the main guy's baby mama and that's their kid in the final slo mo walk. The first shot of her is golden. Then they quickly transition to show her smoking a cig with a cat calling in the background... just so you don't get any big ideas.

I’ll always have a soft spot in my heart for Cowboy Maloney’s … bought my first house in 2002, a little 1,300 sq ft patio home in Ridgeland. I was young and single, with disposable income, and in the market for appliances for the first time. Made me feel like such a grownup, even though I was really just a 29 yo bourbon-fueled lunatic.
Went to the Cowboy Maloney‘s on 55 in Jackson and some very nice older salesman walked me through what I needed. I’d gone in willing to buy fancy, tricked out stuff since it was for my bachelor pad, but once he understood my situation he steered me toward more basic stuff. Told me that someday I’ll get married, and will be back with my wife, who will want more expensive stuff that‘ll be more likely to break down, and so for now I should enjoy what might be my first, last and only chance to buy a $300 washing machine with a mechanical timer. Boy was that old man right.
I will say though, that the ones I’ve been in since then have been pretty rundown looking. I live in Oxford, and was surprised to hear that we (allegedly) have one here in town. I had no idea.

True story- In the 1990's, my wife and two toddler kids were at the Deville Plaza Pharmacy awaiting a prescription, when Con Maloney walked in. He pulled out a little gold necklace out of his pocket and put it around my daughter's neck.
I know him a tiny bit although I haven’t been in his presence in many years. He was always a big personality. Funny and kind and just the consummate salesman.
