Dan Patrick had been advertising that the WNBA commissioner would be on his show today since Wednesday. The show is on site in Lake Tahoe at the American Century Celebrity Golf tournament. He had talked to her and was going to do the interview yesterday after the show aired to be on today's show. Today he says how they were in contact with her and she still was a go. They waited a few hours after she had said she would show and the PR folks finally tell him she won't be able to do the interview.

Dan highlighted how he had asked quite a few people, like Steph Curry and Jason Kelce, about maybe being on the show and they declined and he was fine with that. However he was upset about the planned agreed upon interview getting cancelled 2 hours after it was supposed to happen. Do these folks have a brain between them?

The WNBA should be ecstatic that any credible sports journalist wants to talk to them about anything. More than likely she doesn't want to answer question about the Congress's probe into the league's conduct surrounding Caitlin Clark.

The WNBA has an opportunity for the first time in it's existence to possibly break even or may even turn a profit. People really like CC, but the league will not embrace that. They would rather continue being a grifter league that subsidizes money from the NBA while simultaneously complain about how they aren't paid their "fair share", whatever that means.

Personally I wish the league would have folded years ago just so I can stop seeing the commercials.

Agree. Their festering plan just isn't working. Like the 30th anniversary poster. They have a very reasonable explanation if it was a licensing issue as seems to be the consensus. Why are you not prepared to make that statement? No, instead let it just fester and raise the perception of your incompetence.

They ended up suspending that player from the throat incident so they can easily say we took some action to protect all of our players and that type of play is unacceptable. But again the silence is deafening. Dan Patrick is not a gotcha guy and he loves basketball including the WNBA. Just a huge missed opportunity and they look like they are now hiding things on top of it.

Do what now? I get 100% of my wnba news from sixpack, but this little nugget slipped past me.
Although I do think the treatment of Clark has been ridiculous, the probe by congress is grandstanding by a group of representatives. Basically just red meat for the constituents. It pisses me off when elected officials do stuff like this instead of what they should be doing.

WNBA sucks and never should have been a thing, and certainly not something I'm going to watch. That said, if the NBA wants to keep funding it for whatever reason, I don't give a damn. I think the MLB does similar for softball, maybe not as much.

Women's college ball is better, IMO, because people care about the teams. But we all have to acknowledge that if want true growth, you need people who care AND the best athletes possible. That's why the NFL, NBA and MLB are what they are, they are the best athletes in the world.

The WNBA does not showcase the best basketball players in the world.

The WNBA does a great job of showing what not to do with a PR department. They can’t get out of their own way.
They would literally rather go back to being a league with little revenues or audience than admit that a white heterosexual player could boost the whole league to a new level. I bet they like the Supergirl movie too.

WNBA is just a weird entity. I read an article (don't know if it was true) that said 26% of the WNBA revenue is related in some way to Clark. Between TV viewership or ticket sales when Indiana is involved.

I don't know if Clark is just a raging ***** or just cocky but you don't kill the golden goose. MJ is supposedly a total dick but you didn't see Chicago and the NBA let him get beat to hell every game.

I don't know what y'all are talking about "bad PR" by the WNBA... I for one thought the green dlido stunts were genius, and I'm sure that couple of weeks had the best ratings of the season. Best PR campaign they've ever had.

They need to do more of that - especially if they plan to have Sophie pick one up and shake it again.
I don't fully subscribe to "all publicity is good publicity" but there's been more wnba talk even here in the last couple years than the previous 20 combined, I'd bet.

I watch and enjoy women's college basketball. I've not and probably will never watch the WNBA even with CC. It just doesn't strike me as compelling.
I'm in the same boat. I follow State and will usually watch the Final Four, but I just can't find any interest in the WNBA.

MJ actually did get very similar treatment from other players his first couple of years in the NBA - they talk about it extensively in "The Last Dance".
And he was getting it from guys like Lambeer. The Pistons mauled him in the playoffs.

This was regular against MJ through about 91-92 :

Cancelling an interview 2 hours after it was supposed to happen is odd and unprofessional.

As for not wanting to answer questions about Congress looking into the WNBA for how Clark is treated...well yeah, I cant imagine any leader would want to answer questions about such an obviously partisan trolling issue.
Calling that investigation a reach is an understatement.

I doubt the WNBA is worried or even slightly concerned what this non-issue has to say. I love watching the WNBA. The games have gotten very exciting and attendance is skyrocketing. The talent level is getting really good, the players play hard and don’t flop, cry and fake injuries like they do in NBA and soccer.

Is it on par with the NBA or NFL? Not even close. But, it is growing quickly and has the momentum.

It’s not for everyone, just like NFL, NBA, MLB, etc… isn’t for everyone either. Baseball has empty seats like you wouldn’t believe.

A lot of grown men I know would rather watch and support beautiful women succeeding in their free time instead of watching and studying ugly dudes in tights. To each their own, I guess.

Not me. When they do their "job" they usually mess things up even worse.

My wife is a big Fever fan, and she tries to show me clips of highlights almost every day. The one yesterday was of a defender getting maybe 10-12 inches off the ground to block a shot, and they’re usually something involving a half decent pass right before a layup.

The stands are typically packed and I’ve seen the growth numbers, but I just don’t get it either. Every time I try to watch, all I see is mediocre to downright bad basketball

Yep. I don't know what the money and ratings situation is like, what they've done right and wrong, or any of that. But the attention they are getting is exponentially greater now. Something is working.

I'd let them keep beating up on Clark and Cunningham talk as much **** as she wants and turn it into a wrasslin' production if I was commissioner. Nobody is going to watch it as a conventional basketball product.

I tried watching a game last year with all the Clark hype. Had to change the channel after about 15 minutes.

There was a cool moment in Montreal yesterday. The Wings beat the Tempo (new Canadian team for those not familiar)… anyway, it was the first game being played there and there were over 20,000 fans which made some type of record. At the end of the game, everyone loudly cheered with a standing ovation. I took it as they were so excited the wnba was there and wanted more.

Robin Roberts said when she first started in WNBA that the would only open the lower bowl of indoor arenas and struggled filling that up. Today, the whole arena is regularly packed.

The talent level incoming is going to be rocket fuel for the league too. You can take men’s and women’s gymnastics. The men can jump higher and do more physically impressive maneuvers but while we can all name female gymnasts… I bet none of us can name a male one.

I grew up with male sports 24/7 and I know how I used to look at all this. Times are ABSOLUTELY changing though.

Like I said, it’s not for everyone. I respect that others don’t care for it and prefer watching guys.

There was a time in my lifetime when, as a man, if I tried to strike up a convo about women’s sports I’d have been looked at as off-beat. It’s pretty mainstream now though. Former NFL player at our gym always comes up to me and wants to talk college softball.

Sometimes things aren’t cool until they are.

And Patrick Beverly’s dumb asş said that the Aces could beat some scrub NBA players. This clip is hilarious.

It doesn’t matter if they can beat team x. That’s not the joy of watching WNBA, softball etc… nobody cares that a baseball is hit farther or someone can jump higher. The fact is some guys are ultra fascinated studying ugly guys in tight pants who fake injuries and whine and complain constantly, with corruption at every turn…

Others like watching something fresh and new, beautiful athletes that try hard. Saying Wemby can beat Caitlyn Clark in 1 on 1 is some next level insecurity. It’s completely irrelevant.

Couple of things...

1) Clark gets treated like a piñata and deserves to be protected.
2) It's obvious she isn't part of "the club" so the league doesn't care.
3) Her coach is in on it as well.
4) The commissioner is weak and doesn't want to rock the boat and try to protect her.
5) As long as "the numbers are up", the WNBA doesn't give a shlt.

I have to applaud your trolling effort. Too bad no one reads it because nearly all the regular contributors on Sixpack have you ignored. Actually good for them because you’re an idiot.
