  • Established in 1873 and named after John Gosper, Nebraska Secretary of State at the time.
  • Population is ~1,800 and has consistently declined since 1900, although it did see an increase in the 1990’s. At its peak, the county once was home to over 5,300 people. Despite the county’s overall decrease, Elwood today has seen its population almost double from what it was in 1900.
  • The county is approximately 463 square miles.
  • License plate prefix #73.
  • Elwood is the county seat and largest village in the county.
  • The county seat was originally Daviesville (now a ghost town) but no courthouse was built there due to a lack of funding. Homerville then became the county seat in 1882. However, despite expectations, the railroad was never built to/through the town. Instead, it was built through Elwood, which became the county seat in 1888. The residents of Homerville not only packed up their belongings to move to Elwood, they also moved all the buildings and homes of the town 9 miles to Elwood.
  • Johnson Lake and Elwood Reservoir are two major hotspots for boating, camping, and fishing, providing over a total of 3,300 acres or water.
  • Johnson Lake was originally developed as a hydro-irrigation project during the Great Depression.
  • The Platte River runs through the county, serving as a geographical guide for early pioneers and for the railroad.
  • Almost 95% of the county land is dedicated to cattle pasture or grain/corn farming.
  • The Gosper County Fair is held annually at the end of July. Unlike most fairs, the town owns all the carnival equipment. The Elwood Rodeo is also held during the fair, as well as an annual horseshoe tournament, golf tournament, and a parade takes place every odd numbered year.
