Don’t know where to put this.

USA Wrestling hosted a round table yesterday with Tony Dungy and a bunch of NFL coaches:

Todd Downing, New England Patriots wide receiver coach
Klint Kubiak, Las Vegas Raiders Head Coach
Robbie Leonard, Las Vegas Raiders Defensive Coordinator
Tim Zetts, Las Vegas Raiders Offensive Assistant Coach
Keith Carter, Minnesota Vikings Offensive Line Coach
Ben Ellefson, Minnesota Vikings Assistant Offensive Line Coach
Miguel Reveles, San Francisco 49ers Offensive Assistant Coach
Tony Dungy NFL HOF Coach
Tanner Morgan, Quarter Back for the University of Minnesota.

A lot of senior men and women attended. It was a cool opportunity for the athletes to hear perspectives and ask questions of other high level participants. Extended beyond competition. Some cool quotes.

“We are on verge of biggest transfer of wealth from one generation to next. Are we prepared to transfer wisdom?” -Rich Bender

“Nothing changes for a big game if you believe in your system.” -Clint Kubiak

“You can do your best and work your hardest and come up short.” -Todd Downing

“If you do the right things the results don’t matter” - missed who said it

“If you have growth mindset, you never have arrived, never have figured it out.” -Robbie Leonard

“Pressure is what you feel when you don’t know what to do.” Tony Dungy quoting Chuck Noll

“Leaving our game plan is a sign of panic.” - Tony Dungy quoting Chuck Noll

“What you let in your body is going to affect what comes out of your body.” - missed who said this.

No live goes. Lots of drilling clearing out of and getting to attacks on both sides of body when underhooked.

Always cool to see former Olympic gold medalists roaming the mat and helping out. Kevin Jackson was there and has been there probably every time I have been there. Kendall Cross was there as well. The apparent dropping of egos and team lines to support USA wrestling is amazing. If they can get along, maybe we can get along with Hawkeye report?

Off the top of my head, other OG big dogs who were there:

Royce Alger, Duane Goldman, Kerry McCoy.

Current guys:

Spencer, Desanto, Luke, McKenna, Ridge, James Green, Hidlay, Mike Mach, Wyatt, Demetrius Thomas, Beau Bartlett, Cardenas, Quincy Monday, Plott, Parris.

My son got to scrap with Beau, Luke, and Ridge. Literally three of his favorites.

Sarah was there and was awesome, as always. She said she will be back competing next year, which surprised me given the gnarly-ness of her injuries (I am not a doctor). She is back to running. Also saw her do the deal where she stands on one leg, grabs the toe of her other leg, then fully extends it…on the side she tore up. She’s a freak. She should start a youth club when she is done. Totally built for it.

Coach Zadick is my neighbor. I may or may not have told the story on the old board.

I live in Co Springs. Every year I would send an email to the training center to see if there was a world team practice open to the public. They never answered.

As soon as trials happened in ‘24, I went through the unsuccessful drill again. My son finished preschool a few weeks after trials. There was an AM and PM class, and they all got together to have a little celebration. I was going to skip it right up until the moment my wife was taking him, but was fed up with something with work, so I threw on my Penn State wrestling hoodie and headed over. There was a lady there with a girl in the other class, so I had never met her. She was wearing a Wisconsin wrestling shirt so I of course strike up a conversation. It’s clear she knows what she is talking about, so I give her my sad sack story about failing to get into training center. She says “oh, Im Sam Zadick, Bill is my husband. He will put you on the access list at the gate.” There you have it.

All the people I have interacted with down there, men’s and women’s team, are top notch. USA Wrestling is in good hands.
