Why must we abbreviate everything?

I've thought about this very thing for a long time, believe it or not. Aside from the military, I think it really started its slow takeover with the fast food restaurants. Remember when McDonalds, Burger King, and Kentucky Fried Chicken all became McD's, BK, and KFC (officially in 1991) overnight? Federal Express to FedEx (2000)? United Parcel Service to UPS (2003)?

Words are hard....
