Garden County, Nebraska
According to University of Nebraska-Lincoln records, there have been 2 letterman football players from Garden County, NE.
Randall Jobman – LB 1987-1989, Lisco, NE.

Chief Red Cloud – Born along Blue Creek in what is now Garden County. He was a prominent Native American chief in the 1800’s. He was a great war leader and statesman for the Oglala Sioux. He is represented in the Nebraska Hall of Fame. Red Cloud’s father was Lone Man, his mother was Walks-As-She-Thinks. Negotiated the Treaty of Fort Laramie in 1868 which gave the Lakota Sioux a large land reservation in the Dakota Territory. In 1877, they would go on to lose most of that land as a punishment for defeating General Custer in the Battle of the Little Big Horn.
D.C. Hooper – One of the first settlers who established Lewellen in 1885. He built a hand cart and pushed his supplies while walking from Big Springs and Ogallala in order to live in Lewellen until a store and post office were built in 1886.

Garden County, Nebraska
- Established in 1909 by a popular vote to break off the northern part of Deuel County.
- It was named in hopes the land would become the ‘Garden of the West’.
- Population is ~1,800 (2025) and has been declining since 1930.
- The county is approximately 1,731 square miles, which makes it 1.1 people per square mile.
- License Plate prefix #77.
- Oshkosh is the county seat and largest city.
- North Platte River runs through the county.
- There are 8 ghost towns and former communities in the county, most of which ceased to exist during the dust bowl and great depression.
- The county was originally inhabited by the Sioux and was also a resting place for the Mormons heading west.
- Sioux Chief Red Cloud was born in the county area (before the county was a thing) in 1821.
- In 1855, there was a battle between the U.S. Army and the Sioux tribes at Ash Hollow. 600 soldiers attacked a Brule Sioux encampment, killing 86 people which included women and children. The attack was a response to the Grattan Massacre in 1854 in Laramie, Wyoming by the Sioux.
- Crescent Lake National Wildlife Refuge is over 45,000 acres containing the largest protected continuous sand dunes in the U.S. Many bald eagles spend part of the year in the refuge. It is home to over 200 species of bird, many white-tail deer, pronghorn, mule, coyote, bobcat, beaver, and more. There is also great fishing for yellow perch, walleye, and largemouth bass.
