That quirky place in Lewellen is worth stopping at
Another good memory from Garden County, going back about 30 years. On autumn Friday evening I was driving home to Lincoln from Scottsbluff. The football field lights were on as I passed through Oshkosh on Highway 26, so what the heck ... stopped and watched the mighty Garden County Eagles take on Hershey (I think). First 8-Man game I ever saw. As a strange face in the bleachers, more than one local said hello and asked what I was doing there. Very welcoming.
I later lived in Indiana for over 20 years. One day I pulled into a gas station on the south side of Indianapolis and the car in front of me at the pump had Garden County plates. They freaked when I yelled Go Eagles! (So did my wife, but for a different reason).
The Nebraska Examiner paper did an expose' not too long ago about how the Mormon Church is buying up huge sections of Garden County for food production and water rights. The recent big fire did a lot of damage there
