Why must we abbreviate everything?

Especially diseases or syndromes. I just saw a commercial for some drug that helps with Post Partum Depression and the commercial starts "For people with Post Partum Depression, or PPD...". Is Post Partum Depression just too hard to say? This same opening line occurs in almost every pharmaceutical ad. We have all the texting abbreviations, LOL. We had the Wide Spread Panic debacle a few weeks back. Just saw the IPF in the drowning victim post and people had no clue (NFC) what that was. Can we just PS. (Please Stop)

The Red Rocks post and multiple people asked who the poster was going to see and he refused to just type Wide Spread Panic. He called them The Boys, WSMFP and a few other hints before someone finally clarified. I had to look up on Google who was at Red Rocks that weekend to figure out who was being referred to.

Just because you know a pneumonic doesn't mean other people know it.

This has always been an SPS thing. I remember first coming here many moons ago and having no idea WTH(😜) anybody was talking about with all the abbreviations and inside baseball.

I often ask my kids WTF w/ all the 17n abbreviations? I often get this reply:

They tell me to "Look It Up" here same as I told them when they were growing up. I have spent some time on that site

I can see the youngsters doing it when they text, etc. But when an 80-something year old has something like c u l8r it just looks ridiculous.

Not to mention - why does anybody above 40 hunt and peck on their phones when texting? Just use the two thumbs method. It's easier and faster. BTW (by the way), taking typing when I was in junior high was one of the most valuable courses I've ever taken.

The bigger problem I have is that I can’t ever get out of the doctor’s office in less than 4 hours because of how many 28 letter drug names I have written in my spiral notebook that I have to ask him if they are right for me?

For most of them, 80% of the discussion is him helping me pronounce it, before we even get into what it does.

Does anyone else have this problem?

Not really abbreviation but I’ve always wondered why in the hell has the term worker replaced employee? I’ve always heard people use worker for construction worker (normal) but it seems like ever since the China virus we have a bunch of morons who are offfended by the usage of employee. I for one am not. I’m offended by this stupid **** fantasy world these whippersnappers want everyone to live in with them. **** that.

one reason that I can think of is for legal reasons, someone could be doing work for you and not be designated as an employee, ie a contractor etc.

I work for a large company you've all heard of whose name is abbreviated, and we constantly define abbreviations for things that are already abbreviations used commonly for other things. It's annoying.
