That was an amazing match! Very pleased with the result.
Me too. And my Ecuadorian friends are all thrilled with what England did....in Mexico's home stadium.
I couldn't help wondering what the English fans had to deal with from Mexico's notoriously well-behaved fans while leaving the stadium after the match.

England will undoubtedly demand, citing precedent, that Quansah receive the same probation treatment that Balogun did. How can Infantino say no?

That's a rhetorical question of course. He'll say no because he feels like it. End of story.

Yeah I know that this whole mess inures to the benefit of the US. And I am not naive about the degree of FIFA corruption. So I guess this shouldn't bother me. But it kinda does.
It sets a terrible precedent in international sports competition. I've seen highway robberies in multiple Olympics but never something like that as a result of any boxing decision, gymnastics or skating judging etc. I don't know where this thing takes place in 2030 but no one from our country could complain about anything that happens then. Imagine if it were in Brussels. LOL

I'm sure it would have been no better in England if Mexico had won in front of thousands of drunk fans. I still remember them tossing bottles into the ring after Marvin Hagler destroyed one of their favorite sons for the middleweight title back in the 80's.

It’s been a terrific and very exciting World Cup !

Let’s go USA !

I've only seen highlights so far but Erling Haaland is a character. He looks like Dolph Lundgren at same height of 6' 5."

Watching the Knicks win title I had to notice how crappy the trophy is. It looks like a wastebasket and cost 30k. Super Bowl Trophy is around 50K and also looks junky. World Series trophy is around 30K.

The World Cup trophy looks like a work of art and not something from a high school trophy case. The original that teams dont keep is worth around 20 million with 700k of gold. The winning teams get replicas to take home and those are just gold plated but still nice than US stuff outside of hockey

I'm trying to enjoy soccer. I'm following some of the games and even watched the USA v BIH game at Tiger's Tale, which was fun.

But it's still such a bitchy little sport. The entire incident with Balogun reinforces everything that's bad with this sport:

  • Two guys fight for the ball with no intention to cause injury.
  • The guy who got (somewhat) hurt writhes prostrate on the ground acting like he's trying to survive an assassination attempt, slamming his hand on the ground and grabbing his calf so that everyone can see where his life-threatening injury occurred.
  • Our guy rolls around on the ground too because he's got to counteract their guy who is doing such a good writhing job.
  • The sport decides to use VAR and issue a red card that has unclear ramifications, but definitely ousts our guy for that game and the next game and maybe more or something like that.
  • We don't get to replace our guy in that game because . . . whatever.
  • The assassinated player rises from the dead and jogs right back onto the field when play restarts.
  • FIFA, the sponsor of this patty-cake play-acting nonsense, suspends the suspension after receiving a call from one side's government official and grants an appeal that isn't allowed.
  • FIFA replaces the suspension with double secret probation for the next year, whatever the hell that is.
  • Belgium, which had nothing whatsoever to do with any of this, whines about the suspension of the suspension because bitchiness is required in soccer.
This is a beautiful game? I'll watch tonight, but this nonsense has reminded me why I just don't have time for soccer.

My cousin’s husband is a silversmith with Tiffany’s and actually makes the Lombardi Trophy.

My understanding is after you win the World Cup so many times, forget the number, you get to design the new trophy. This particular look I think was one Brazil did.

As for the other points…

The Lombardi Trophy does not look junky at all. It has very good lines for something like that and what it’s for and represents.

Haaland, who apparently is a very nice guy, does not have the looks of Dolph Lundgren. Not that there is anything wrong with that. 😜

Would make soccer much more exciting. The sport is far too subjective. To truly take hold in America, it's needs to be Americanized. It's very backwards. A highly imperfect sport.
All sports are highly imperfect. Football, 11 minutes of action in a 60 minute game. Football and Lacrosse, most only play offense or defense. Basketball, people complain the 3 is used too much now and any physicality is frowned on. Baseball, love it, but boring as hell until big games.

The idea that it has to be Americanized is silly. We tried that by calling it soccer.

They could embrace the idea that a clock can be stopped and restarted, and that everyone watching and playing the game should know when it will end.

Yea, and now Australia calls their team the Socceroos.

It's only a matter of time. The game will need to be Americanized to truly succeed here. And it will be. America is the biggest prize there is from a market perspective. They will do whatever it takes to get it. A two point arc will go a long way, along with using the clock properly.

All of those games you mention are far, far less subjective than soccer. And they had to become that. Because that's what American's expect.

It's so dumb they don't. This isn't 1925 anymore. There shouldn't be one guy on the field controlling timing. It would be like the NBA not having clock operators. The WC is being watched by millions here and that is the number one thing I keep hearing. What the f are they doing with the clock? Might as well start the clock now for the game tonight. It's all so meaningless. A proper clock would make end games so much more exciting. Teams could actually strategize if they knew there were mere seconds or minutes left, like subbing in a player for the goalie and pushing him into the box, or even the goalie themselves. Mexico should have done something like that but they didn't, especially on the last corner. Why? Because they didn't know exactly how much time was on the clock. A clock that always goes over the allotted extra time mind you.

Right! Someone who he wouldn't otherwise give two sh--ts about and would be trying to have deported if he were just an engineering student moonlighting as an Uber driver..
That example would probably be here on a student visa. Which is OK by me.

The current WC trophy is from 1974 and was designed by a Italian sculptor Silvio Gazzaniga (won out of 53 designs). The NFL trophy was designed on a napkin by Tiffany vice president Oscar Riedner during a lunch with Pete Rozelle. The WC trophy is a work of art and the NFL trophy is a basic display pedestal with a football on it. I'm sure its well made but anyone with a napkin/pencil could have designed it.

The thing I like most about WC trophy is that its compact and players can hold it comfortably. The motif of the trophy is a couple of humans holding up the world in a moment of victory. Then we see humans holding-up the trophy of humans holding up the world. Things like that make it art - it looks great in people's hands. The first WC trophy (Pele pic)was a relative dud.

With Haaland and Dolph I think like a casting director. I don't know any 6' 5" blond guys with square jaws and shoulders. They might be common in Europe or CA but in northeast its not easy. Keep in mind Dolph did steroids for over a decade around "Rocky" days.

+1
The mystery clock is dumb AF. Why the secret?

The Fox panel were just discussing the Balogun situation. I didn't think it was possible for them to ignore the 800 pound gorilla here, but they did it masterfully.

Maybe they feared being punted to Fox News? ;)

Great post...then you added the last line...so unnecessary SMDH.

Anyway, yeah, they handled that REALLY well I thought. Each with a different take on things as well.

Balogun shouldn't have gotten the red card. But USA coach should do the right thing and voluntarily not play him.

So Argentina should have held Messi out of the Austria game after he committed a similar foul against Algeria that didn't even get reviewed? He scored both goals against Austria.
