Jesus. What a cluster17. Not saying what the right or wrong call is for the red card / suspension, but the optics on this are absolutely terrible. Just make up your mind and enforce the decision.

FWIW, I think the correct call should have been just not giving him the red card in the first place.

That basically means FIFA didn’t think it should’ve been a red card. But L4 will be here in a second to tell us why FIFA is wrong.
It is still a straight red, that wasn't overturned. The suspension was. Suspensions do get overturned in league play sometimes . This is very unusual at the WC. It will leak out why eventually. Of course we all know that FIFA is always right, transparent, incorruptible, and never succumbs to pressure of any kind. Anyway, great news for the US team.

I suspect what it means is they’d like to see the host nation at full strength. Regardless I’m glad he’ll be able to play.

To be fair, he did watch some liverpool matches in the '90s. Basically an expert.
Didn't see too many in the 90s actually. They didn't start showing up here on cable till the early 00s. I used to watch what was basically the "Match of the Day" show every weekend starting around 94 though.

Yep, I imagine they were under intense pressure to do this.

B-52's headed to Fifa headquarters recalled as well.***
Hell yeah. Now it's on. Dude has definitely been a challenge for defenses.
Optics don't look good but it seems reasonable although I bet Belgium doesn't think that way.

I just read the FIFA statement. The suspension is suspended for a one year probationary period....whatever that means. Someone that knows more than me might say different, but that is a new one on me.

It means they want the host team at full strength. Just like they wanted Renaldo in all 3 group stage games so they swapped the last 2 games of his 3-match ban for a similar suspension.

First time? It’s FIFA, they play favorites and will do random off the wall things like this

I’m not talking about just FIFA here.

The ref on the field decided “incidental contact / no card”.

Then VAR ref overrules the guy on the field, and says “red card / suspension”.

Then FIFA overrules the overruling, and suspends the suspension (that sentence hurt my brain to type, but it’s accurate).

The overall result here - 17ing nobody seems to really know what the rules are, not even the folks in charge of enforcing them.

That’s terrible optics, and a huge criticism of international soccer in general here…..not just FIFA.

He’s still going to be suspended, but they suspended his suspension. Yeah, that was a terrible sentence. So the rules are still in place and he still has the red card but they just played their hand and said we want him for the TV ratings which is what FIFA is all about.

How is he still suspended? The probationary period is one year. The World Cup is over in like 2 weeks. If he goes past the “one year” with no further incident, he’s off scott free. If he has another incident in the WC somehow, he essentially gets a 2-for-1 bargain on red cards. If he has no further incident in the WC but something happens right after, he misses like one qualifying match for whatever the next meaningless international tournament is.

It’s a virtual non-suspension at this point.

And some say Americans don't have great ideas to change rules.

Rumor: The VAR referee was Juan Ernesto Soto Arevalo from Venezuela. He is the one that adamantly called for the red card. Jerome Brisard from France was the assistant VAR referee and went to FIFA and said that there was bias in the decision.

There is no mechanism to reverse a red card yet FIFA did so. This is unprecedented.
