Nick Bell had to be Iowa's biggest back. He was 6' - 4" and 255#. I'll never forget the game he ran over and around a #6 ranked Illinois team. Nick had 168 yards in a 54 - 28 win for #13 Iowa.
that is pretty huge and won't be beaten on size but mark weisman at 6' 240 deserves a mention at the sledgehammer position. it was fun to watch him fling dbs out of the way with the utmost disdain

I see Kuhn committed to Missouri yesterday. Bummer. Thought it would come down to Iowa or Nebraska. Might explain the Barnett offer over the weekend for the class of 28.

A fullback that played RB out of necessity. Bell had very good speed for his size.
So, his pro career included the same necessity?

As a matter of fact, unless there was an injury with Stewart, that I don't remember, where was the necessity at Iowa?

Flemister committed to Illinois. I think we went 1 for 6 on our uncommitted visitors from our big weekend. And the one we got was pretty much an under the radar guy.

With all the portal players we brought in, how would anyone expect that we'd bring in a big class? Many of the portal players have several years also. Just saying.

This seems a very relevant point. We seem to have changed our recruiting strategy to develop young players out of the portal. And that does impact high school recruiting. Not sure how I feel about that as our model has always worked really well.

Lots of sugar coating going on here. We're just flat out not getting our targeted guys. Are we broke or are we not working hard enough in recruiting. We have an incredibly experienced staff but I'm questioning if we're missing young energetic coaches to recruit.

I don’t think it’s an effort issue but there’s an issue of some sort. I laugh every time someone brings up that the strategy has changed and we’re shifting to younger portal players as the preferred method.

If that’s the case why are we wasting money and time offering high school kids at all and bringing them in for visits? My guess is we are putting close to zero dollars in HS kids relative to the competition. We have to figure out that balance there.

I wonder if we're paying incoming freshman all the same, no matter the position or recruit talent.

Questioning if long tenured coaches have the fire and desire to want to recruit isn't that crazy.
I have had discussions with one of the highest rated recruits on Iowa's board, most recently Thursday morning. He would laugh at you for questioning the effort of the Iowa staff in his recruitment. No idea if he ends up at Iowa (opportunities to go anywhere he wants), but effort simply isn't the issue. Fans have zero clue what goes on behind the scenes.

The point of my post was to figure it out what was going on behind the scenes. If you know, and are not going to say it then just shut up and act like you know nothing. Because the reality is you probably don't.

I don't know why recruits mentioned above haven't chosen Iowa. My point has been very clear, however. Lack of effort, as you suggested earlier, never has been and never will be the reason why. That's what I know.

KF has been wanting a contract extension for over a year and hasn’t gotten it. Kids probably have doubts that he’ll be around for their careers.
He is under contract through the end of the 29 season. Four years counting the upcoming season. Less and less players spend 4 or 5 years at the same school due to the portal and NIL. KF's contract situation is a nothing burger when it comes to recruiting. His age and historical aversion to offense, OTOH . . .

So enlighten us. What is important to him?

Fully acknowledging that not all kids prioritize the same things but curious what you are hearing.

The Hebrew Hammer! It was fun to watch the talking heads going on about "Weisman for Heisman" when he had about 8 tds in his first three games....

I gave two different hypotheses on why we've been missing on players. You've brought nothing to this discussion.
And has been added we may be putting a lot more focus on signing transfers who have excelled a year or so at a lower level and have several years left to play. Add to that last years excellent class, and HEAVY on OL studs.

^^^^
Even if kids have that ability to portal out, I assume most want to stay at one school.their entire career just from an academic standpoint.

KF"s age is definitely being used against him in negative recruiting.

And WHY would you be paying much to incoming high school players who have done nothing in college compared to players with 1 or 2 years who have proven they can excel in college football?

Hawkangler was responding to a comment that brought up Marc Weisman. I'm pretty sure his first sentence referred to Weisman, not Bell.

Not for me to say. He loves Ferentz and his potential position coach. Feels the same way about other schools though. Would guess as of today Iowa's in his top 3. No idea how it will shake out.

That's not what's happening. That has nothing to do with us missing out on recruits were going hard after.

SO, the FACT that we brought in several WR's who look really good who have 2 or 3 yrs left, We have a really solid RB rm with mostly young players and that we signed several stud OL in the last class, and that we may NOT be prioritizing cash pay outs for unproven high school players, could not possibly have anything to do with recruits deciding to go elsewhere? Had no impact on any of their decisions? Have you done exit interviews on these players, or how would you know why they decided to go elsewhere?

I would imagine if you are maintaing a great culture you would stay away from mercenary types who are just trying to cash in on the highest bidder. The reason being they will not stay to develop but just seek to hit free agency every year to collect nil. the recruit has to be a fit for the program in this day and age especially.
