Taking Care of Business, Baby.

That is what it is all about.

To that end I took a look at who did their job (win an NCAA title) the fastest (average bout length) without needing special accommodations (no OT bouts).

3 point TD could factor in. You probably already posted avg time of TF5 before/after change …

Turns out it has taken an average of 335 seconds in the three years since the three point TD to secure a TF.
In the three years prior to the three point TD it took an average of 324 seconds.

So it takes 11 more seconds to secure the TF with the three point TD.

The real difference is in the number of them rather than to time (153 vs 49).

One possible way to explain it is that with the three point TD less skilled wrestlers are getting TFs they would not have otherwise gotten with the two point TD. And due to their lesser skill it takes them more time. You do not have to buy that though. There may be other explanations.

Starts and end with Danny Hodge. Was never taken down during his college career, 76 percent of his wins coming by fall. I had the privilege to meet Danny several times at wrestling camps and he was great with my young wrestlers, very patient showing technique and had a great sense of humor. A true killer on the mat with a smile and a twinkle in his eye.

I would categorize never being taken down and 76% pins as dominance stats rather than efficiency stats (except to the extent pins came quickly). And there is no doubt he is on the Mount Rushmore for dominance. And probably for efficiency too. But it is harder to quantify and normalize for earlier eras.

WKN, what up! this question is extremely pedantic, perhaps unbearably so. So please let me know if you want to abstain....

I can't remember where I saw it before, but I'm pretty sure it was a wrestling-related internet space, and I keep meaning to come back to reexamine this Sports-adopted notion of "Mount Rushmore." Since I can't remember where I saw it, to properly source the person who put the idea in my head, I'll try it myself...

If the sculptor Gutzon Borglum (great name), who carved out Mount Rushmore claims that he chose the 4 Presidents to represent 4 different aspects of our great nation:
1. Founding / birth = George Washington
2. Growth = Thomas Jefferson
3. Development = Teddy Roosevelt
4. Preservation = Abraham Lincoln

Should we sprots fans also convert our largely "Top-4 / Best" usage of Mount Rushmore into these Borglum categories as well?

I love this idea though I may need to noodle on it a bit.

I agree that the idea is intriguing. That said, most participants on message boards such as this one - myself included - have historical knowledge on this topic running a mile wide and an inch deep. Without suggesting that anyone with thoughts on the topic hold back, it would be great if those with more historical knowledge take the lead and we avoid getting such discussions sidetracked.

OK, I spent some time thinking about it I realized how hard it would be to come up with just four, especially given the numbers of people who have contributed and the variety of ways they did it (wrestling, coaching, promoting, governing, etc.). Rather than do the hard work of eliminating worthy candidates I decided to chicken out and build three Mount Rushmore's.

One will be for wrestlers, one will be for coaches, and one will be for others who have contributed in a non-wrestling or coaching capacity (whether they once wrestled/coached or not).

And it gets worse. I think I will have a first and second team Mount. I already have my eight wrestlers, first four coaches, and first four others. But this is going to take some time to organize, research and write - so stay tuned.

Create 4 Mount Rushmores and then you can have a Mount Rushmore of Mount Ruashmores. (any factor of 4 will work, actually)
