We have 62 days until our first game of the 2026-2027 football season against the Ohio Bobcats on 9/5/2026.

  • Established in 1872 and named for its location along the frontier border in the late 1800’s.
  • Population ~2,650 (2025) and had seen a steady decline since 1900 until 2020 when the population has since increased by ~5% the last 6 years.
  • The United States Census Bureau has a classification for countie, one of them being “frontier counties”, and in order to qualify as a frontier county the county must have less than 6 people per square mile. Ironically, Frontier County, Nebraska did not meet this measurement until 1950.
  • Frontier County is 980 square miles.
  • The current population density of Frontier County is 2.7 people per square mile.
  • The county seat is Stockville, but the most populous city is Curtis. Curtis has tried several times to move the county seat from Stockville, but has failed.
  • License Plate prefix #60.
  • Medicine Creek Reservoir and part of the Red Willow Reservoir lie within the county.
  • Medicine Creek Reservoir is a 1,768 acre lake with cabins, camping, fishing, hunting, swimming and boating recreation.
  • Cattle ranching and farming dictated a lot of the settlement patterns in the county.
  • Curtis is home to the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture.
  • Curtis is known as Nebraska’s Easter City.
  • Curtis tap water was judged as the best tasting water at the 2014 Great American Water Taste Test.
  • A prehistoric Amebelodon specimen was found on a farm in Freedom in 1928.
  • Arrowhead Gold Course in Curtis, NE, is a 9-hole course considered one of the best in the state and one of Nebraska’s best kept secret. (Don’t tell anyone else)

Theodore Doyle
  • 6’2 215lb offensive lineman wearing #43
  • Born in Maywood, NE, Doyle graduated from Curtis High School in Curtis, NE.
  • He played football at Curtis HS, but never lettered.
  • Walked on at Nebraska in 1936 and played until 1938, lettering all 3 years for Dana Bible.
  • 2x All-Big Six lineman in 1936 and 1937.
  • Ted was drafted in the 8th round (68th pick overall) of the 1938 NFL Draft by the New York Giants.
  • He would go on to play 8 season in the NFL, primarily for Art Rooney and the Pittsburgh Steelers where he wore #28 (seen in pics above)
  • After the NFL, Ted would become an assistant coach at Fairbury Junior College, which is now part of the Southeast Community College system and on the Beatrice campus.
  • Nebraska Football Hall of Fame member.

Other Notable or Prominent People from/born in Frontier County:

Ralph Brooks
– 29th Governor of Nebraska from 1859-1860, he died while in office. Born in Eustis, NE and spent his formative years in Sargent, NE. He was a member of Theta Chi at Nebraska Wesleyan. His term was known for promoting industrial growth, traffic safety programs, and accelerating the interstate highway construction.

Clayton Yeutter – Born in Eustis, NE, Yeutter served as the 23rd Secretary of Agriculture, appointed by President George H. W. Bush, and then served as the Counselor to the President. He has a statue in the Jeanne Yeutter Garden on the UNL campus.

Eyer “Slonnie” Sloniger – Born in Moorefield, NE, Slonnie was the first chief pilot of American Airlines. He grew up in Moorefiled until his family moved to Lincoln where he finished high school and attended UNL. While at UNL, WWI began and Sloniger dropped out to serve. After a lot of flight training, Slonnie deployed to France. The war ended 4 days before he was set to fly his first combat sortie. He returned to Lincoln after the war performing aerobatic shows, giving flight instructions, and giving airplane rides. He served in the Army Air Service with Charles Lindbergh and then both worked together at Robertson Aircraft Corporation flying mail routes. When American Airlines was created, it consolidated many smaller airlines with Robertson Aircraft Corp being one of them. In 1934, Sloniger was named the first chief pilot. Member of the Nebraska Aviation Hall of Fame.
