With it being the 4th of July, it feels like we've reached the mid point of Summer (although not literally). We're only 63 days away until kick off, I guess I'm feeling sentimental about past game days at Kinnick. I wanted to hear about your favorite memories of Saturdays at Kinnick.

Personally, I don't know if I have a specific favorite memory, but my favorite part was the atmosphere and being there with family. When I was a young kid, I would go with my parents, brother, and grandparents for every home game. I remember we would park in the Newton Road parking garage that was technically meant for hospital staff, but sometimes fans could get in if they were lucky enough, and my dad knew how to sweet talk his way in if needed.

We would then have a short walk through this area of medical buildings to the stadium. I remember the leaves changing, hearing the stadium noise in the distance, other Hawkeye fans walking to the stadium with anticipation. Then we would come out on Hospital Drive north of the stadium, it was a quant little street, and at the end of it, we could finally see Kinnick. We would walk under the water tower, which was gigantic to me as a kid, and finally be surrounded by Hawk fans.

I remember the sounds and even the smells. I remember talking with my grandparents on the way to the stadium about the team, the opponent, and what we should do to win. So I don't have a favorite specific memory, but the experience of Kinnick is my favorite part, and that's what makes it magical to me.

It would be great to hear what makes game days at Kinnick so special for every one else. Was it a win? Being there with family? Tailgating with friends? The top notch atmosphere?

And as always, Go Hawks!

My frat partnered with 3 other frats for a tailgate on Melrose. Apparently the owner had leased the house but not the yard to the kids living there, leased the yard to us. They had no idea we were coming. They were not happy when we packed hundreds of college kids in this tiny yard every weekend.

Had an entire 8 ft truck bed full of natty lights and white claws. Set them up in 2 massive tubs in the backyard. Somehow we got connections with some people at Juul (beginning of that whole craze) and we were just throwing out thousands of dollars worth of free Juul pods off the deck. Got on barstool Instagram. Had so many people on that deck that it legit broke in half. This deck was like 2 feet off the ground, so nobody gave a **** and we kept raging. I was dancing with an absolute dime. Didn’t end up closing the deal, but you can’t win every battle. Was still awesome. Eventually the cops came and broke it up. We got our hands on the police report somehow, and the cop had written that it was the biggest tailgate he’d ever seen in Iowa City. Pretty sure these stories are a collection of a couple tailgates in that yard, but damn that was a good year.

I have been a massive fan my entire life, but I will proudly state that I did not go to single game in my time there. The second I woke up on game day it was booze o clock. 6AM, grab a couple shower beers, wash up while shotgunning then put the speaker on full blast (back in black of course), grab a couple pots and pans and start waking the house up door by door. Tailgate all day, watch the highlights after. Then hit the bars. As the great Johnny Manziel said, win or lose we booze. Those were the only years in my living memory where I didn’t watch every snap 😂.

Nowadays, what I love most about Iowa City is that we can actually get all the boys back together for at least one weekend, even the ones who moved to completely different parts of the country. We can’t quite party like we used too though.

Too many to single one out. Going again this year so we'll make more memories. Kinnick is special at night and the wave is even more special with the phone lights.

Atmosphere and family for me as well. Great memories as a kid of parking at Finkbine and the walk up Melrose with my dad, getting closer and closer until I finally could see the stadium. Just a sense of awe when they came out to Back in Black. We only went to 4 or 5 games total in my childhood, but I saved the ticket stubs and wrote the score of the game on each one

Bleachers shaking and atmoshphere, for instance when Hawks beat Nebraska early in Fry area. Iowa got the ball back late in game to seal the win and Nebraska could not stop the clock. Pretty awesome. Other similar moments, Iowa beating Michigan on late FG etc. Must add the Wave. Great place to watch college football!

My dad worked for the bread company that supplied the hot dog and hamburger buns to Kinnick (Iowa) stadium, and he would often take that route on game day. This was back in the late ‘60s, early ‘70s. Sometimes he would bring my brother and me along. We would mess around in an empty stadium for a few hours, climbing under the bleachers, etc. Found a nice radio once, and also an “official” football in the stands that was obviously missed after a practice.

Iowa was not a good team back then. My brother and I would find seats in whichever end zone the opposing team was headed towards (switching every quarter), in order to try to catch an extra point or field goal, since there were no nets at that time. Caught one once. We picked the opposing team’s end zone because we figured they had a better chance of scoring than we did.

One of Iowa City’s finest threw us out once when he caught us throwing paper airplanes from the top row in the NW corner (a couple hours before game time). We pooled our money and had just enough to buy my brother a knothole ticket so he could find Dad and get me back in.

One of the last games I've seen live at Kinnick was about 26 years ago in 2000. My Dad was in failing health and I came up from KC with my youngest son. Met Dad, my brother and nephew drove over from Davenport. Watched the band work out in one of the buildings. Went to the shirts and skins basketball practice, and then some taligating. Lots of pictures with our group and my dad with my son. One by the big metal Hawk statue, I remember. Game was fun, but by the end it was all my Dad could do to get back to the car. He passed a few months later as the cancer treatments consumed him. Several Hawk treasures were tucked in his casket. Really glad I got to spend that time with him. He was an ardent Hawkeye. He kept me connected sending VCR tapes of football and basketball games. Retired now, I hope to get to a game in the next couple of years. Would love to see the wave in person.

83Hawk. If you don't mind sharing, what company did he work for? Just retired from that industry last week, so I've been involved in service to Arrowhead and Kaufmann here in KC but never in Iowa.

Favorite memories are the ‘81 season, especially beating the Cornshuckers, the clinching game was special since immediately after it was over I had to make the drive down to the east side of St. Louis for my work shift at 11 PM. I did make it. Of course, THE ‘85 game against Michigan.

Trausch Baking Company. They handled Sunbeam, Hillbilly, and Peter Pan Bread. Loooong time ago! Was sold to G. Heileman in the 70’s, then sold and resold a couple more times over the years. I don’t think they exist as Trausch anymore.

Thanks. Not to hijack the thread, but My step mom dated Tommy Trausch the owners son in Dubuque in the 40's. long before she met my Dad. I'm sure they merged with other companies. I started working for Metz baking here and they were bought by Earth grains, who was bought by Sara Lee, who sold their bread division to Bimbo bakeries in 2017/18. They are the largest baking company on 6 continents (including North America), and are a privately held company held by a few families in Mexico. Crazy....

Cool!

Trausch was also part of Metz/Earth grains/Sara Lee/Bimbo! Small world!

They tossed you for throwing paper airplanes?! OMG. That's so unbelievable yet entirely believable. Reading about that really ticks me off. I'm glad you were able to get back in. I remember those days of knothole tickets. They were advertised as for high school age and under, but they sold them to anyone who had the 5 bucks or whatever it was.

It is. I thought Trausch may have been involved in all that. When I started there were dozens of companies in the mid west. Now its only a handful and Bimbo has about 70% of the business. Wonder came back after being off the market for a year after their bankruptcy, but they're owned by a banking/holding company in California now.

I've only been to 2 games. The 1st was during the Stanzi era against UNI. I took my dad who had never been to a game. We met up, and rode the train in.

The 2nd game was this past fall. My wife got me tickets to PSU for my 40th Bday. It was crazy the difference in atmosphere the PSU night game was compared to the UNI game. My wife didn't pay much attention to seating and our seats were a couple rows down from the PSU section. It was annoying listening to their dumb "we are" chant with the thank you at the end. I don't think I've been in a louder environment than the last couple drives that sealed the win. We stayed in our seats so we could watch all the sulking PSU fans walk down the steps.

It used to be walking to Melrose Market across the bridge for beers and munchies. More recently it is beers and burgers at George's, a few mini-bottles at Dirty John's, and walking to Kinnick. "Go Hawks" to total strangers, they are Iowa fans, our brothers and sisters that day.

Go Hawks! its amazing the number of Hawk fans all over. Run into folks all the time in KC with license plate brackets or stickers on cars or wearing hawk gear when i'm out somewhere.

I win tickets on WHO as a kid. I knew Inailed it and was afraid I was going to get the weekend for 2 in MSP. Hearing my name and tow on the radio was the start if it.

Growing up as a farm kid less than a farm kid, this was special. IC was about like following the yellow brick road. We didnt travel much. My childhood like a lot of other kids was rather difficult. My parents wernt going to get me there so I got a friend who was 11 years older with hawk experience to take me. If he didn't I wouldn't have gone.

We parked south of the tracks. The masses going the sane path was impressive going up the hill.

The band, Scottish Highlanders, and drum major put on quite a show.

The Hawks weren't good, but they won. It was a dream come true.

Several schoolmates heard my name on the radio. The radio guy said.... and from xxxx, then my name. Several thought they had won.

Fantastic day...

Were you guys backsides "puckered" when we had to block back to back field goals to pull that game out against the "might Panthers"? lololol.. That was one crazy season of strange games and a could have been conclusion......

Not sure if it's my best memory from Kinnick but it's the one that has always stood out. It was 1984, my first-ever game at Kinnick, when Iowa beat Michigan 26-0. We were part of the "Tastes Great!" vs. "Less Filling!" chant where we were sitting, and I got to watch Bo Schembechler losing his mind at the refs and throwing tantrums on the sideline. It was a great day.

Back in the day, sitting in the grass in the north endzone. Saw woody Hayes getting pelted by snowballs at halftime with Hawks kicking his teams ***. Now I'm with my 2 boys and loving every second. The pass by Petras to beat psu was right in front of us. I have never seen a crowd so spent from cheering and walking to their cars in silence.
