It keeps getting crazier but schools keep paying so I guess the market is deciding this is normal until this whole mess gets fixed. How high can it go?

The schools spending the most have the most generous donors. That’s not all of the formula but it is the most impactful driver.

He only answered because he was under oath.
That's true but it was reported 3 months ago that Xavier had tripled their budget from last year. Also, Cincinnati Coach Calhoun was asked his budget under oath in the same trial and he declined to answer.

Xavier isn't hiding. Their AD was open last June when he said they were 15% below the Big East average and that it wouldn't happen again. They later announced a $500 Million fundraising Campaign that included $40 Million specifically for athletics. They obtained pledges for most of that money already and the University is investing in their flagship program. As a result they have the #1 Transfer class in the country per On3.

Exactly. There is definitely differences amongst programs and coaches as to the level of transparency. It doesn’t stop media types or fans from speculating one way or the other, regardless. We have threads in why $$ is mentioned repeatedly for certain teams, as much as the basketball stuff.

I also didn’t get the notion that if one spends $14M and doesn’t win to a sufficient level in a certain season, it’s a disaster and people should want their money back from “lack of ROI”. But spending $6M or $10M etc doesn’t mean that. That to me smacks of mental gymnastics used to justify a certain narrative, or not.

It’s a lot of money, no matter how it’s sliced, and you are either in the game or not. We all know who the best coaches are all things being equal anyway, at least in most cases, because these coaches have resumes. You can see who built programs quickly under the old rules and achieved certain levels of success, and who are perhaps more of a mixed bag comparatively (like our coach).

In what world would you expect donors to be happy to give their hard earned money to a program that doesn’t meet their expectations. Providence is on the hook for $9M to English for exactly that reason.
