By population it’s the smallest country to ever advance out of the group stage. And they finished second, so it’s not one of the courtesy third place spots.

I know a guy from there. He was born in US but both parents born there.

I read that most of their starters were born in Portugal, Spain, or, randomly, the Netherlands. So probably a bit like the Italian World Baseball Classic team… but not quite so obvious.
A few were born and developed mostly overseas, but more of our starters than not were born here.
All but 3 starters (and 4 on the roster) were born in the USA. So yeah, USA is about as homegrown as any other team is. Actually, I'd be very surprised if we don't have more players born in USA playing on other World Cup teams than we have born outside USA playing on our team.
I was a young man and not that far removed from playing a little competitive soccer when we last hosted in 1994.
I remember the sentiment then that if we could ever get our best athletes playing soccer we could become a world power. With the son of an NFL star emerging as a futbol star it seems like it may be finally happening, even if it has taken a very long time.
Alex Freeman is making himself a lot of money in this World Cup. BTW, Chris Richards is from Birmingham.
