Should tax dollars be used to pay for Coca Cola?

Meh, I hear this **** all time and everyone likes to take sides. What's right IMHO (like a lot of things, lies somewhere in the middle).

I think we can all agree that someone on SNAP shouldn't be able to go down and load up on cigarettes, beer, candy, potato chips. That's not what its for.

On the other hand, I don't especially mind if someone picks up a 12 pack of Coke with their groceries. These folks aren't exactly living the high life and I don't mind them having a little soda or some candy. I think that MOST of your SNAP benefits should go toward modestly priced and if possible food thats good for you.

While enforcing that would be a *****, that's a nice compromise.

I've got mixed feelings on this. Taxpayer funded food should be healthy but how much is it worth to enforce it? Soft drinks come in zero sugar options. Do we really want grocery and convenience store clerks having to deal with it?

Agree with you. It's not good for low income families as it could lead to further medical issues and expenses.

I just don't know how you enforce it.

Is it possible that clerks can just ring it all up and the card automatically takes out what is allowed and you pay the balance? Make it clear that it is not the clerks?

In general, no. But a lot of sodas are sugar free. And if they use a small portion for a little treat once in awhile, so be it.

That said, these restrictions are nothing more than red meat nonsense to keep the lower and middle classes distracted while the wealthiest continue to screw us all over. SNAP accounts for about 1.5% of the federal budget. Not allowing soda will do just about f*ck all to decrease the deficit.

“Their” money???? F’ck that…..that’s my tax money. And anyone else that actually works for a living.
It’s hilarious how these freaks think. I guess sugary drinks are a hell of a lot better than going to Zimbabwe for trans studies

Relatively easy to enforce. Easily can configure logic in the store point of sale software that would not allow EBT payment methods to apply to applicable goods. But that isn’t the hard part … the hard part be would be that it would require a mandate/law from the Federal Government to force stores to implement such logic within the POS systems.

with all one party suffering from suicidal empathy … I just don’t see it happening.

it should though

This is how it works now. There’s SNAP eligible items, and not. For example, prepared/cooked foods are NOT allowed (like rotisserie chickens?), but a frozen chicken is fine. It’s all automatically done at the register.
Full cart scanned, snap swiped, whatever is eligible comes off, and you owe cash for the balance

Actually, it is. The government has given a portion of tax dollars and given it to citizens who need it. So at the end of the day it is their money. They should be able to buy what they please in the grocery store. It is up to the market and individual liberty to decide what is a desirable product

It was your tax money. Then once you paid your taxes it became the government’s money. Then the government decided to delegate 1.5 cents per dollar to feeding the poor, a righteous endeavor. If anything we should be looking at cutting veteran disability benefits, as these make up 2.5% of the federal budget (2.5 cents per dollar, nearly double the amount that is spent on feeding the poor)

Paying for Coke a Cola or pating for a Reflection Pond...what's the difference?

Taxpayers are on the hook.

What do you mean by enforce it? These SNAP/EBT cards are already set up so non-food items can’t be purchased with them. When the customer swipes the card, at least from what I’ve seen, the card pays for all food items. Then there is a remaining balance on non-food items that the customer has to pay for separately.

It shouldn’t be that difficult to re-program the cards to exclude soda and what not.

True, but the government should not be contributing to poorer Americans’ unhealthy lifestyles.
