I get Short's anger but if people were fired every time someone gave character testimony in a murder trial...

I would have sentenced the man to death without a second thought but this just seems like misplaced anger to me. And it's not about football. Short got his way though so hopefully that brings him some peace.

At PSU, football is the means to The End.

This has all the markings of a huge lawsuit with Short being ONE of the defendants

"Needed" and "warranted" by whom?
That's a fair question, I suppose. But I must ask, why do you care how often Mr. Short appears in McKeesport?

Your antipathy toward Mr. Short does not make sense unless there is something else at play. His daughter was killed by someone. He and his family are crime victims. His desire to see that anyone who supports the offender to be held accountable is logical to me. Your hatred, if it is only about this situation, makes no sense at all.

Wanting the boss of someone who gave character testimony for the defendant to be fired isn't a logical position—it's an emotional one. That's understandable as people are emotional about these cases. But let's not confuse emotion with logic.

Why would there be accountability for an employer simply because his employee spoke in court about the character of someone they knew? That happens in courts every day. Character witnesses are called to provide information about a person's reputation or character—not to endorse, participate in, or excuse criminal conduct.

Can we stop pretending that a character witness is somehow responsible for the crime itself? Testifying about someone's character is not the same thing as committing, enabling, or covering up their actions. What accountability do you think exists for this kind of testimony?

““We needed some fresh blood, just like the Pittsburgh Steelers did," board member Mark Holtzman said Wednesday night.“

That just sounds so stupid.

Anyone who has spent 40 years in a public school district (especially in some administrative capacity) would have stories that belong in a Gothic Novel.

Perhaps I should refine my thoughts a bit. When I spoke of Short's reaction being 'logical' I stated that his reaction was "logical to me." Of course it is a desire based on strong emotions. That's the 'logical' part, to me. Strong emotions ofttimes lead one to make bad choices. That's a logical statement. Not that the emotions are 'logical'...the reaction.

As for accountability, that's not up to me, you, or to Mr. Short. He can want or even demand pretty much anything he wishes. That does not mean that anyone has to honor his wishes or demands. Those decisions were made by school board members, apparently. I have no idea what information they based their decisions on or how they arrived at any conclusions. I don't know the nature or context of the testimony, so I do not know how to answer your question. I guess I would have to say that I would have a hard time personally testifying on behalf of someone who killed a woman, regardless of how well he had performed for my football team. If I were to do so it would be a direct reflection on my character. But that's just me, I guess.

That aside, I was not commenting on whether anyone should be held accountable due to the above. I don't know anything about it. I was responding to someone who seems to be harboring a hatred towards Mr. Short that I do not understand. The only 'reasons' given so far have to do with how often Mr. Short has been present in McKeesport. That is what I was addressing.

Very fair response
I can't fathom I'd ever be a character witness for a murderer but it happens every day--maybe I'd surprised myself but I do agree I can't see myself doing that. I'm just not judging someone else for doing so--I don't know their relationship but maybe it was a father/son type? I think it would have needed to be on that level to speak on his behalf.
