Here's a fun offseason challenge.

Build your own Kentucky basketball coaching staff using assistants from the modern era (1990–2026), but there are a few rules:

Rules​

  • Your Head Coach can be anyone who served as a Kentucky assistant coach between 1990–2026.
  • Current or former Kentucky head coaches cannot be selected as Head Coach.
  • Your staff must include five assistants (six total coaches including your Head Coach).
  • You must include at least one assistantfrom each of these coaching eras:
    • Pitino
    • Tubby Smith
    • Calipari
    • Pope
  • You may have no more than two assistants from the same era.
  • The Head Coach does not count toward the era limit.

My Staff​

Head Coach: Jai Lucas (Calipari) - Understands the Modern Game and can recruit.

Head Assistant: John Robic (Calipari) - Master scouter and strategist, the brain behind Cal.

Recruiting Coordinator: Orlando Antigua (Calipari) - He has helped recruit crazy during Cal's era.

Assistant Coach: Jason Hart (Pope) - I like his fire under Pope. He was the only coach who would yell at the players to do something while they were a deer in the headlights.

Assistant Coach: David Hobbs (Tubby Smith) - He was there when we had Rondo, Prince, Fitch, Hayes etc. One of Tubby's top assistants.

Assistant Coach: Winston Bennett (Pitino) - Brings that Kentucky Connection

I know this isn't part of your criteria, but given I don't have the time to full answer right now (at work), I'll just say this.

Make Leonard Hamilton my recruiter. Again, I realize he's not in your timeframe. But us older guys, fondly recall the studs Hamilton brought in back in the 70s and 80s. There's no championship in '78 without Hamilton. And that '84 juggernaut would not have existed either.

I'll take a stab at your real question when I get a chance.

I wanted to put Billy D, but I put Jai Lucas for the long haul, because I expected moist people will put Billy D has head coach. Billy D is 1A and Jai Lucas is 1B imo

I feel like the last three rules were because you wanted an excuse to justify 3 Calipari picks. Add Gillespie and remove the two assistants from the same head coach
