for their job as athletic director.

Stricklin, Cohen and I'll even count Byrne who got a master's degree from State while he was working here.

This is an interesting question, but I bet I would think it's been pretty common and we are just catching up.

Cohen is from Alabama and Stricklin has higher ambitions than being an AD and being AD at Florida he thought would put him into a better situation to do so. I doubt it happens for him. He will regret leaving. There are some bad feelings about him.

I think you are right about loaferz. Do you think he has aspirations to be SEC commish?

Cohen I think just got too big for his britches. I think they both might have regrets one day about the bridges they burned with their alma mater but no regrets on leaving to 'move up'. One thing is I can't envision a scenario when either one comes back home ala Ron Polk.

I saw him a last week in Omaha. Seemed pretty happy to me.

Well, Byrne went to his "dream job", the only place he would leave State for. But ... then he left his dream job for Alabama.
I will say this - Byrne actually reached out to me for some reason before he left Arizona to come to Bama asking how would State fans view him being an AD for another SEC school. I told him the fact he got his master's from State - I don't think people would view him in the same light as someone who got their undergrad.

Byrne liked SixPackSpeak.

Here’s the thing: People can get tired of working at the same place for years.

Byrne, Stricklin, and Cohen didn’t spend much time at their previous positions before coming to State, so their leaving MSU doesn’t surprise me

I’ve long had this theory that Cohen would have left State after the ‘16 season to be head coach at Alabama had he not been elevated to AD…

I always kinda thought Stricklin might want to prove himself as someone other than Bailey Howell's son in law and prove he could make it as himself .

I think Stricklin does have his eye on the commish. He saw he had a better shot being AD at Florida. I don't think it works out for him.

I may be wrong, but I feel like Cohen would have stayed if he had felt wanted. I think Auburn did us a solid there.

Stricklin left for a school that had proven it can win championships in football, basketball, and baseball in the modern era (actually didn't won until after Stricklin got there, but it was clear they had the ability to, even without really having fan support). There may have been some desire to prove he was something more than Bailey Howell's son in law (I'm sure it was validating to an extent for a major SEC school to want him).

Stricklin hasn't exactly lit the world on fire at UF as far as football goes, but he has done well enough overall that he has been guaranteed a very cushy wind down period even if a lot of fans aren't happy with him.

His father was a prof at Bama, and IIRC he went to Tuscaloosa Academy, so he’s familiar with the place…

Bama would frame it as a Mama Called hire…
I know all that. It would never have happened unless we ran him off. Like we did at AD.

He was tired of coaching baseball at that time.

Only Cohen and some of his family knows why. Everyone has their own guess. As far as we know he just might preferer Alabama Black Snake.

Yeah.

Many people go to other places to rejuvenate themselves. State gave Cohen an alternative.

Contrary to what some think, Cohen is (was) an MSU guy. Going to Alabama to coach baseball was never an option, again, unless we like fired him. Had he gone anywhere else, maybe it's to a Florida or Texas type situation. But he'd been getting burnt out coaching, and when the AD situation came around, he decided to do that since he'd be involved in it to an extent, and he cared about MSU.

We all know the MSU split at AD was a mutual thing. Right, wrong or indifferent, it was. Auburn just happened to be the landing spot. It certainly wasn't out of some affinity for that state of Alabama.

He'll never be SEC commissioner. The next SEC commissioner will be a CEO type hire - to deal with TV contracts/expansion/Super League. Stricklin has zero life experience outside of college campuses.

I don’t know why, but this makes me laugh. His team gets its collective asses kicked in a super regional that they hosted, and yet Cohen finds a way to take a trip out to Omaha on the university’s dime regardless.

The more amazing thing is Auburn chose John Cohen.

I liked Cohen the baseball coach but he should have NEVER been given our AD job. He was really bad overall and I'm glad Auburn took him off our hands. I still don't understand why they wanted him. And his results at Auburn overall have been pretty bad as well.

Yep rumor in Fall 2016 was Cohen was going to step down with or without the AD job. He was tired of being baseball coach here. He probably would’ve been hired by Byrne at Bama in Spring 2017 then when Stricklin left he put together his campaign to be AD with some backing from boosters

Frankly, a State alum will likely never be AD here again. The best we ever had that didn’t stick around was Byrne. The rest were token promotions!

We need someone who is from the financial industry, a true money guy or gal! With just enough knowledge about athletics to make smart hires. Someone who has reached a certain level in the Banking industry that knows all the right people in all the right places. I know someone who is working his way up and has some Bulldog backing in the Alumni Association who in a few years will be ready to step in and run our Athletics programs.
