Colfax County, Nebraska

- Schuyler is the county seat and largest city at ~6,500 residents.

- Established in 1869 and named after Vice President Schuyler Colfax (VP to President Ulysses S. Grant).
- Colfax County was created as part of a split of Platte County.
- Schuyler was originally named Shell Creek and chosen as the county seat due to its station along the Union Pacific Railroad.
- The county is roughly 416 square miles, making it the 8th smallest county in Nebraska in terms of land area.
- The Cargill beef processing plant is the largest employer in the county.
- Schuyler was Nebraska’s first “cow town” as the point where the cattle drive from Texas would meet the Union Pacific. It was later moved to Kearney.
- Colfax County’s original settlers were of Czech, Irish, and German immigrants.
- The Oak Ballroom in Schuyler is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
