Huge win. And especially to keep the 2-0 margin. Australia essentially cannot win the group. And Türkiye would likely have to beat USA by 3 goals to win it (plus beat Paraguay tonight).
Turkey just needs to win tonight and beat US. I read that this year they changed the first tiebreaker to included h2h component when two teams are tied for first.

I suppose if Australia beat Paraguay, then it’d be a 3-way tie in that scenario and goal difference would come into play.

Türkiye & Australia will be heavily favored to beat Paraguay. Ways we lose group is easier to post:
Türkiye beats Paraguay & USA & Australia doesn’t beat Paraguay.
Türkiye beats USA 2-0 & either Türkiye or Australia beat Paraguay by 4 goals.
Türkiye beats Paraguay & beats USA by 3 or more goals or by 2 goals & scores 3 or more.

I make no warranty on this. But I think it’s right. Bottom line is a win or draw vs Türkiye seals it, as does an Türkiye draw or loss tonight. And we win group even with a 1-goal loss as long as Australia beats Paraguay. Lose by 2 or more & it gets tricky.

Will be interesting to see how they approach the game with Turkey. Got a slew of guys with yellow cards. Would be nice to sit most of them to wipe their cards clean.

It will be interesting. We’ve already advanced. But I think it’s important to win the group to get a good draw. Türkiye could really help us out by dropping points tonight. Otherwise I think he need to take that game seriously. Maybe sub out the yellow card players at halftime if we have a lead.

Paraguay strikes in the second minute. 1-0

What's the history behind red cards for covering your mouth?

It’s a newer rule. You can’t cover your mouth in situations like that probably to cut down on racial slurs.
Ah. Covered his mouth and must have called him a 17ing puto. Hopefully they'll hang on to tie but I doubt it.

Yeah but they aren’t in a confrontation with the other team on the mound. Maybe with their manager but not with the other team.
So it’s only during a confrontation like that then? I seriously missed that rule change. First I had heard of it. Is it just for the World Cup or is it a blanket rule?

Just adopted

Players at the World Cup could face a red card if they cover their mouths when speaking to opponents during confrontations.

The decision was taken during a special meeting of the International Football Association Board (Ifab) in Vancouver, Canada, on Tuesday, where two Fifa-proposed law amendments were approved.
Players who leave the pitch in protest at a referee's decisions could also now face a red card, following ugly scenes at the Africa Cup of Nations final between Morocco and Senegal.

Both law changes have been approved as competition opt-ins by the Ifab.
Fifa has confirmed they will be adopted at this summer's World Cup.
The issue of players covering their mouths became high profile in February when Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni raised his shirt while speaking to Real Madrid's Vinicius Jr during a Champions League game.

The Argentina international was accused of racist abuse and provisionally banned for one match. Following a Uefa investigation, Prestianni was found guilty of homophobic conduct and banned for six matches - three of which were suspended.

The issue was discussed at the Ifab annual general meeting in Wales later that month where it was agreed members would reconvene ahead of this week's Fifa Council in Vancouver. The decision remains at the absolute discretion of the referee, who will consider all circumstances before issuing a red card.

It’s basically to prevent players from racially abusing other players while keeping plausible deniability because they covered their mouths and you couldn’t read their lips. So FIFA basically said “no covering mouths, full stop.” If you’re saying something during a confrontation where you have to cover your mouth, it’s probably a very bad thing you’re saying and you’re going to get sent off for it.
