Didn't read the article but with the expanded field more than one will move out of the group. The group winners and runner ups are determined by points. 1 point for a tie 3 for a win and of course 0 for a loss. Goal differential will also be a tie breaker in group play.It starts with pools. The US has 3 other teams in its pool. You play all three, and the winner of the pool moves into a bracket much like our playoffs. One and done.
Similar records in the pool will lead to tie breakers such as goals scored and goals given up.
Edit: Okay, I got some of that right. Here's an article that explains it.

How the FIFA Men’s World Cup works
The FIFA Men's World Cup tournament has begun. If you're new to the sport and need a lesson on how it works before games get underway in Seattle, we've got you covered.www.seattletimes.com

There will be 12 teams that will finish third in the group stage and only eight third place teams in group stage will advance to the round of 32. In my opinion this is where the goal difference will be crucialDidn't read the article but with the expanded field more than one will move out of the group. It's all done by points. Every region has countries that compete against each other in the region. The points accumulated in play allows the teams to go or not go to the world cup. This does not mean the best teams go because all religions aren't the same, as you see with Italy not making it but Haiti did.How does a team qualify to be one of the 45 (yes I know that Canada, Mexico, and the US are automatic qualifiers making it a 48-team field since they are hosting)?
And what criteria is used to weed out the four third-place pool teams to not advance to the round of 32?
Meaning that initial competition prior to the 48 spread amongst Canada, The US, and Mexico is between neighbours? Pool play, or one-on-one? Points also decide wo gets out of group and who does not. It also decides tie breakers by goal differential and such.
Each association, confederation or whatever name they use get so many spots for the world cup.Meaning that initial competition prior to the 48 spread amongst Canada, The US, and Mexico is between neighbours? Pool play, or one-on-one? Australia / New Zealand /Indonesia / The Philippines?
I'm still not so keen on non-gridiron football, but I do appreciate the explanation. And I can see how it's a big deal outside of North America. And I appreciate that as well. Each association, confederation or whatever name they use get so many spots for the world cup.

Confederation Slot Allocation (2026)
- UEFA (Europe): 16 direct spots
- CAF (Africa): 9 direct spots
- AFC (Asia): 8 direct spots
- CONMEBOL (South America): 4.5 slots (4 direct + 1 playoff berth)
- CONCACAF (North America & Caribbean): 6 total slots (3 direct + 3 host nations)
- OFC (Oceania): 0.5 slot (1 playoff berth) belivesports.com+1
Each association, confederation may have a different format to qualify, but I am familiar with UEFA (Europa). The UEFA had 54 teams competing for 16 world cup spots. They divide the 54 teams into 12 groups which consist to four to five team in each group.
Each team in each group plays each other twice home and away. So if you are in a group with four teams you play six games and if you are in a group with five teams you play eight games. If you win you get three points, if you tie you get one point and losing no points. The winner of each of the 12 groups automatically qualify for world cup. They do have a playoff system paring the best of the second-place teams to select the rest of the four spots of world cup qualification. Usually, the UEFA qualification process for most teams is like six months and four other spots takes longer. Other confederations, associations may take a few years to qualify.
America is so insular. We still primarily use the inefficient imperial system rather than going Metric. No one cares.

I would enjoy hearing your estimate of how much it would cost to go metric as a country.America is so insular. We still primarily use the inefficient imperial system rather than going Metric.
We should have seen it through 50 years ago. I have no idea how much it would cost. We've accepted 1L 2L and 500ml (half liter) bottles of soda. That's a good start.I would enjoy hearing your estimate of how much it would cost to go metric as a country.![]()
Of course it makes sense. Everything is in units of 10. Just move the decimal point as needed.I saw a SNL skit where Washington explained it though. It made sense.
But we still put ounces below it for us infidels! We should have seen it through 50 years ago. I have no idea how much it would cost. We've accepted 1L 2L and 500ml (half liter) bottles of soda. That's a good start.
Another initiative would be for gas pumps to have a "toggle switch" so that the display would show liters instead of gallons on demand.
I have already accustomed myself to temperatures in celsius; I no longer convert to Farenheit. Normal human body temperature is 37°C.
When you step outside, look at your phone and check the local temperature in Celsius. If it states 23°C, now you know what 23 feels like. No need to convert to Farenheit.
Of course it makes sense. Everything is in units of 10. Just move the decimal point as needed.
A creation of the French Revolution. The distances, volumes and weights are never "just right".Of course it makes sense. Everything is in units of 10. Just move the decimal point as needed.
It would have been more doable in the mid-70s.No, je was explaining why we dont go metric. It was a joke.
And Jacque touched on the reason I've always heard. The massive cost of switching over our manufacturing.

They also killed a spacecraft when NASA and a manufacturer got their measuring systems mixed up.Feet and inches put 12 men on the moon. Metric seems to like crashing on Mars.![]()
Should have stuck with feet and inches. Then it wouldn't have happened. They also killed a spacecraft when NASA and a manufacturer got their measuring systems mixed up.
Nope. Go to meters, liters, and grams, like the rest of the world.Should have stuck with feet and inches. Then it wouldn't have happened.![]()
I asked for your cost estimate because it was comically obvious that you are clueless about this whole situation.Nope. Go to meters, liters, and grams, like the rest of the world.![]()
I have no idea how much it would cost the US today to do what we should have done 50 years ago. I have no idea, and will stipulate that.. Clueless sounds inappropriately derrogatory.I asked for your cost estimate because it was comically obvious that you are clueless about this whole situation.![]()
It was comically clueless. After I asked for your estimate I really expected you to Google like a normal person and say "oh". But you doubled down on clueless. Looking up would have felt like cheating. You asked how much I thought it would cost to completely metricate the country, not what someone else thought. It was comically clueless. After I asked for your estimate I really expected you to Google like a normal person and say "oh". But you doubled down on clueless. It was appropriately derogatory. And derogatory is spelled correctly.

A chance to educate yourself is never cheating.Looking up would have felt like cheating. You asked how much I thought it would cost to completely metricate the country, not what someone else thought.
It would have to be done in stages. And no, the football field will remain at 100 yards, and the bases on a diamond will remain 90fett apart, although you could make the distance 100m down the left field line.
This is probably the nicest personal response I have ever received in my many years of posting on Gamecock Central. Thanks!A chance to educate yourself is never cheating.![]()
