Let me stress that the pictures being posted post-match are from a single match. There will be 38 days of this! Thirty-eight glorious days of this. I can understand if this is too much for some of y’all to handle, no judgement. But let it be asked and answered: Who’s got two thumbs and is watching the World Cup? Me.
IF the US team makes it to the finals, and I know what day that is, I will probably might check to see what the score is. That is about as much as I could stand.

Two games so far today, two 1-1 draws. There was quality, but draws won’t help get stupid ‘Muricans to pay attention to futbol. Granted, I don’t have a solution other than one team winning in regulation. Shootouts are stupid horse-a$$, and you can’t have sudden-death overtime over a 38-day tournament in summer heat.

😞

Is it weird that my only interest in the World Cup is watching videos of Europeans enjoying the freedom of being an American (free soda refills made me chuckle) and Koreans making out with hot Mexican women? I have not watched a single game yet.

Not weird. I think we all have experienced enough circuits of the Sun to recognize weird, and it ain't this.

So you're saying that the US "never got close to winning a World Cup", and you define getting close as "I define final 4 as getting close maybe final 8"?

Wouldn't that mean that when we got to the Final 8, we were close? (or at least pretty close)
Yeah pretty close if we ever got there but clearly we have no sustained success. Maybe we do some damage this year.

It's just the ignorant American in me, but the lack of scoring combined with matches ending in a draw ... ugh.

If you're going to make me sit through a 1-1 or 2-2 slogfest (I know, I know, a 2-2 game is an action-packed shootout, or so I'm told) ... at least figure out a way to declare a winner at the end of it.

Rather than penalty kicks, maybe try a 10 minute period without a goalkeeper. Or something. Anything. Rock, paper, scissors, perhaps?

The tournament starts Thursday at 3 pm! I myself will be spending a lot of time watching.

I sincerely hope that y’all can embrace these 38 days. What have you got to lose? You’ll see plays of astounding skill and athleticism. The last day of group stage, the drama is off the charts. I enjoy it. Perhaps the fact that I got nothing going on in my life at present is a factor. Who knows, who cares? (Don’t worry about me, we’re going to Greece in the fall.)

Anyway, y’all be y’all and if you hate soccer, well, we each of us got something we hate. Me: disco.
As a long retired FB coach......I hate soccer. Always thought it was a communist plot to emasculate American manhood.

My Instagram algorithm is packed solid with these. At first I enjoyed them. Now I’m beginning to think they are insincere comments creating content in order boost followers.

A foreigner amazed at his first visit to Buc Ees is funny the first three or four times. After that, not so much. I’m finding some of these people claiming to be awe struck at our retail establishments have actually been to the US numerous times. Some have been here for months or even years.

Aside from that, most visitors do seem to be having a good time and we appear to be treating them well.

The draws will make for a very exciting last day of group stage. And once you’re past group stage, in the knockout rounds, there are no draws.

I can't wait. That 0-0 draw on the last day of group stage that pushes New Zealand through, because there were so many draws in prior games ... whoa nelly, my heart's a racin' just thinking about it.

I guess I'd rather not suffer through a draw ... or 8 ... in the first go 'round, hoping it'll provide more excitement some time in the future. Heck, you can advance to the next round ... actually, you can win a group ... without winning a game.

And, yes, once you get past the group stage, often times, in order to determine a winner, they have to do something completely different than the normal, actual game play/flow in order to determine a winner. Sort of like determining the winner of a football game by having a best of 5 field goal kicking contest.

Maybe they can just make up a random spot on the field to start the extra time....let's say the 25 yard line. Better yet maybe they can get points by not scoring, but if they kick the ball over the goal and just make up an arbitrary number....like .67 of a point so folks that don't even like the sport can say...hey we scored 2.01 points by kicking the ball over a bar. Being a hater is easy to do because it doesn't require any real thought. Best and most popular tournament on the planet and the fans from around the world are proving it right here in our back yard.....tough pill for knuckle draggers to handle, but hey....you were pretty good at chasing down the pedo protectors so you got that going for you.

In order to appease American football fans, I suggest that soccer play in 5 to 7 second increments and then take a 30 to 40 second break to talk about what happens next. Also, they should mix in a few 300 pound men that can't run more than 20 yards but are there to just clog things up a bit.

Well they already dumbed it down for our fans for the commercial breaks. Cannot wait until the next WC where they get a 5 minute warning and 3 timeouts to keep that non stop action going.

This is the second time you came in here and pouted like a teenage girl who just got dumped for a hotter chick. This thread isn't FOR you ... there are at least 2 other World Cup threads that are meant for you ... that are celebrating the World Cup. You can go in there and love you some soccer all you want ... and hopefully you'll be free from troglodytes like myself.

But while you're here ... what about not liking aspects of a certain sport would make one a "knuckle dragger"? Use your words.

but hey....you were pretty good at chasing down the pedo protectors so you got that going for you.

WTactualF?!? Get medicated, and wait anxiously (but not too anxiously ... hence the meds) for the next riveting 0-0 draw between Uzbekistan and Congo.

I'm actually one of the casual non-fans who is trying to make an effort to embrace the game .. and I'm voicing my displeasures as I bump up against the differences between this sport and other sports I actually and actively enjoy ... and, maybe, through that process, I'll learn to accept those differences and become a fan, to some extent. Instead, while I'm working through my dissonance ... in a place explicitly earmarked to do so ... I'm met by someone who makes me want to reflexively throat-punch soccer fans for being arrogant SOBs who don't know they shouldn't be where they are.

In other words, STFU. With all due respect.

They pretty much do that now ... except the 30-40 second breaks are more like 2-3 minute breaks where no one talks, but players just walk/jog around the field kicking a ball back and forth before someone decides to make a run for it, or kick the ball somewhere in the vicinity of the goal.

Also, they should mix in a few 300 pound men that can't run more than 20 yards but are there to just clog things up a bit.

Those 300 pound men could also be used to carry off any player who falls to the ground in absolute agony, acting as if they just had their limbs ripped off, just to pop up and run in a full sprint seconds later, when they realize they didn't draw a penalty .. and make sure those players don't reenter for the rest of the game.

Tuesday could end up being the first time a World Cup game impacts travel to a baseball game. Tuesday’s tourney schedule is TBD, so I’m not getting too worked up about it just yet … but I am thinking about how I need to retrofit the vehicle to go Death Race 2000 if I need to push my way through.

Oh joy ... one of the premier teams - Portugal - comes out and, against a handicapable team, dominates their way to a thrilling 1-1 DRAW. This will add so much tension to Portugal's much anticipated showdown against Uzbekistan.

Go Portugal ... tie Blue Hens.

Since you said you're trying to enjoy the sport, maybe compare it to baseball. Where there's even less activity, longer breaks, less athleticism, similar levels of scoring and the games are drawn out forever.

Sport is one of the most wonderful thing humans do. The mix of competition and the art of athleticism is a joy to watch and should be celebrated now matter what the sport is. Hating a particular sport seems absolutely silly to me. I find that it's usually the person doing the hating that has the issues and not the sport itself.
