On the eve of college coaches being allowed to officially contact 2028 women's wrestling recruits, I've put together a preliminary list/summary of some of the top prospects to know as it pertains to the Iowa women's program:

Names to know as recruiting opens for Iowa and the Class of 2028 - On3

Of note (and in the story), the Iowa staff has not typically been known to engage early with junior prospects - focusing most of its attention on recruiting/signing the senior class.

(That process is still ongoing for the 2026 class, BTW).

Having said that, there are still several early top names you can be sure the Hawkeyes will be involved with in time. So, I've compiled those (and some other likely/possible targets) for fans to keep in mind over the next two years.

(I've also been told the Iowa staff is ready/willing adjust its timeline if it feels like its current approach puts them at a competitive disadvantage.)

As for a similar piece for the men's program, that'll come out about 9.5 months from now in conjunction with the recently adjusted recruiting calendar (see below).

Strange the women’s recruiting still goes by the old rules. We would only be a few weeks away from the midnight phone calls. I guess it does give the coaches a better idea what weight they may fit into. Joe Bachman was still a lightweight when we recruited him after his sophomore year, now it looks like he will be a 65/74. You can bet most of the big programs will be contacting them in some way this year to skirt the rules.

Tanner, can you provide an update for the Class of 27. I saw that several of the top prospects visited ISU over the weekend.

I was surprised by that too - having assumed that the NCAA might want to have some uniformity across the same sport.

But from what I was told, a recruiting calendar change was never even proposed, much less voted on by the NCAA Women's Wrestling Committee - of which Clarissa Chun is a member.

(The men's change first showed up as an 'informational item' last December before rapidly progressing toward a proposed 'expedited legislation' in April.)

Maybe that will change in the future?

But until then - and as I wrote in the story - I'll be curious to see if the divergent recruiting calendars actually cause the men's/women's timelines to more closely align for the first time.

For comparison's sake, I can only think of two top-30-ish girls prospects who have committed thus far in the class of 2027, whereas basically the entire top 100 for the boys has already chosen a school - most of them by last fall (i.e. Joe Bachman).

Here's the link to last year's story:

It's 'Ghostbusters' time for pivotal 2027 Iowa recruiting class - On3

As for a Class of 2027 update - I'll probably write a full overview later this summer. But yes, you're correct, ISU did host a whole host of top prospects last weekend.

I'd expect the Hawkeyes to set up their big visit weekends as they have in the past - likely during the football season.

(Maybe the ISU game?)
